Racing Around: Area tracks plan busy weekend

May 27, 2010
By JAMES?A. ELLIS, The Leader-Herald

Memorial Day weekend means racing, and plenty of it on the local scene.

Caroga Creek Raceway will host two days of racing with a regular show plus a junior Slingshot "Clash" on Friday night. The karters will return Saturday for a non-points show as part of the Tobias Tour Race for the Slingshot divisions. Hot laps take to the track at 6:30 p.m. both nights.

Glen Ridge Motorsports Park will host a regular night of racing and Albany-Saratoga will have a regular race program plus kiddie rides and fireworks.

Saturday, the Luca Oil Empire Super Sprints will drop the green flag on their season with the Seventh Annual Earl Halaquist Memorial as part of a regular race card at Fonda Speedway.

Some of the ESS drivers and their cars will be on hand to sign autographs and talk racing from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Winner's Circle Restaurant.

According to her web site, Jessica Zemken will be in competition at Fonda and Utica-Rome Speedway. However, don't look for the white 1Z in the pit area.

Zemken has a new look this year. She is piloting a red and black No. 14 sprinter.

Last season she placed second to Lance Yonge at Fonda in the ESS race in September. Doug Emery won the 2009 Memorial Day Weekend event.

Sunday, Utica-Rome Speedway will host the ESS as part of the regular race program.

Also Sunday, the annual DIRT Hall of Fame induction ceremonies and 100-lap, $6,000-to-win big block main event. Hall of Fame drivers Bill Wimble, Dave Lape, Dutch Hoag, Billy Rafter and "Irish" Jack Murphy are scheduled to be on hand for a pre-race meet-and-greet session.

Monday, the rescheduled 200-lap, $10,000-to-win Victoria 200 will take to Utica-Rome Speedway. Racing is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

The motorcycle racing season also gets under way this weekend with Royal Mountain hosting CNYMRA motocross Sunday and Monday.

Practice is set for 8:30 a.m. both days.

And just in case you can't make it to a local track, there is always the Coca-Cola 600 and Indy 500 on TV.

Race added

Fonda Speedway has added a 30-lap, $3,000-to-win feature for the modifieds to its June 9 O'Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions 410 Sprint car show.

The last time the 410 Sprint cars appeared at Fonda it was on July 28, 2002 as part of the defunct World of Outlaw Gumout Series. Shane Stewart picked up the victory that night over Wayne Johnson, Tyler Walker, Craig Keel and Jason Sides. Walker set the track record that night, turning a 15.281-second lap.

Point fund increased

Local business owner Mike Sowle has stepped up and added $3,000 to the total point fund for the Thunder on the Thruway Modified Series between the Fonda and Utica Rome Speedways. Sowle Trailer Service (STS) stickers will now be on the modifieds.

In addition, Sowle also is stepping up to help the 602 Limited Sportsman division at Fonda by contributing $1,500 to their point fund total in 2010.

Brett Hearn won the opening race of the series at Utica-Rome. The first series race at the Fonda Speedway will be June 5 with Twin 22-lap events paying $2,500 to win each in a Tribute to Fonda Speedway legend Dave Lape.
