GLOVERSVILLE - Despite suffering a stroke about a month ago, Gloversville Enlarged School District Board of Education member Stan DeVoe said he is feeling well and plans to run for re-election in May.
DeVoe suffered a stroke last month and spent about three weeks in the hospital and at a rehabilitation center. He said he is recovering quickly and believes he will be well enough to attend a board meeting this week and run for re-election in May.
"I had a pretty hard go of it, but I'm getting better in leaps and bounds," DeVoe said. "I'm doing well and I don't want to quit."
DeVoe said it has been an uphill battle since his stroke. He said he still has some problems with his right wrist but said the problems aren't noticeable. He said he was sent home for a brief time but had to return to the hospital after more problems resurfaced. He is home now, though, and is feeling better, he said.
DeVoe said he wants to continue the work he's done on the board and encourage more people to attend board meetings and take an interest in the board.
"When I ran for office I promised [my constituents] I would look out for their best interest and I feel I've done that," he said.
Board of Education President Pete Semione said he is glad to hear DeVoe is doing well.
"If his health allows him to continue on the school board, we would love to have him back," Semione said.
DeVoe's seat is one of four on the board that will be up for election in May. The seats held by Frank Carangelo, Jean LaPorta and recently resigned board member Harry Wiggins are also up for election.
Former board member and president Perry Paul was appointed to fill Wiggins' post until May. At that time, he said he was unsure if he would run to fill the post again.
Semione said Robert Curtis, the son of Johnstown Board of Education President Robert Curtis, has picked up a petition to run. He said Carangelo and LaPorta have also indicated they plan to run again.
Semione said Curtis would be a "wonderful addition" to the board.
"He's very active in the community," he said. "I think he would be outstanding."
Paul said he has not decided if he will run to fill Wiggin's seat. He said his daughter, who has Type I diabetes, recently had a medical procedure. He said he will soon find out the results of that procedure and will decide then if he wants to run.
