At Thursday night's Johnstown school board meeting, a decision was made by a 7-2 vote in favor of allowing Sunday sports practices.
A comment was made in a recent article from Mr. Robare that we are the only school in the area that does not allow Sunday practices. Since when do we follow what everyone else does?
Not allowing Sunday practices has been the one thing that makes Johnstown stand out. Years ago, a group of volunteers made that request to the board and that board respected the request, and a policy was implemented that we would not allow sports to practice on Sunday.
I understand the situation this past spring with the boys baseball team. There are always exceptions to the rule. However, allowing regular Sunday practices puts so much pressure on our families to choose between their commitment to religious education programs and their commitment to their team. I think the board members should be ashamed of themselves.
I am a religious education leader in this area, and it has been difficult enough to plan service projects and community events with so many of our youths playing club sports. Now I have to compete with my own school district.
I am asking all coaches to please keep in mind that many young people in this community have made a commitment to their faith. Please don't make them choose between that and a Sunday practice.
