GALWAY - The Galway Lioness Club, in conjunction with the Galway Lions Club of District 20-Y2, locally sponsored the Lions International Peace Poster Contest 2009 with students of the Galway Central School District.

The following are the middle school winners:

The winner of the local contest was Laura Gardner, a sixth- grade student, who was presented with a $25 cash award and a framed certificate; Kendra Anne Allen, a seventh-grade student, who was awarded the second-place poster and was presented with a $15 cash award and a certificate; Steven Culbert, a seventh-grade student, who was awarded the third-place poster and was presented with a $10 cash award and a certificate.

Gardner's winning poster was forwarded to the Lions District 20-Y2 Peace Poster Contest Competition. Her poster was awarded second place at the district competition.

The local peace poster contest was open to GCSD students who were 11, 12 or 13 years old on Nov. 15.

Contestants were asked to create a poster that visually communicated the contest theme "The Power of Peace," a news release said.

The winning poster is displayed in the middle school office window.
