Fire destroys former store

MAYFIELD - Mayfield firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a former local gas station and store on Dennie Loop Road.
The fire at the former Atomic Gas station, which has been in Mayfield for more than 50 years, began around 4 a.m. Saturday and took several hours to contain because of weather conditions, said Mayfield Fire Chief Chris Mraz.
No one was injured in the fire.
"We were lucky to have a creek behind the store," said Mraz.
The second floor of the building was home to Kimberly Warner-Colson, who is the daughter of Bert, one of the original owners of the building.
Kimberly Warner-Colson was not home at the time of the fire, but did arrive back home that morning to witness the building in flames. Warner-Colson referred to the gas station as a "landmark" in Mayfield.
The building had a "couple" of wood stoves inside it, Mraz said, but officials did not know this morning whether the stoves caused the fire.
Warner-Colson's father helped build the original store in 1947 and was the owner of the store for many years.
The Atomic Gas station has not been a gas station in years, and more recently was a convenient store.
"It has been here for forever, a lot longer than I have, and I've been here for over 40 years," said Mayfield Historian Betty Tabor.

Wow..a piece of my younger days gone. I used to go in The Atomic 2-3 times a week. Even closed, it was always a reminder of days past.

I think this reporting neophyte meant to say 'convenience store' and not convenient store. Must be from Jersey.
