CANAJOHARIE - The third round match between host Canajoharie-Fort Plain and Hadley Luzerne-Lake George proved to be for the championship of Saturday's Canajoharie-Fort Plain Dual Meet Tournament.

After battling on the mat for 13 bouts, Canajoharie-Fort Plain held a 36-30 advantage in the team scoring. However, Hadley Luzerne-Lake George put wrestlers on the mat to accept forfeits in the 96 and 103 pound weight classes to claim a 42-36 victory.

It would be the only match C-FP would come up short in as the War Eagles went on win all five of their matches to claim the tournament title. Canajoharie-Fort Plain accepted the runner-up trophy, while Berne-Knox-Westerlo placed third in the six-team tournament. Rounding out the tournament field were Cobleskill-Richmondville, Taconic of Pittsfield, Mass. and Green Tech Magnet School of Albany.

"That was the main match," said Canajoharie-Fort Plain coach Todd Jones. "In my opinion, the key in the match was at 135. I clearly thought it was a slam situation. It wasn't called and my kid was unable to continue. It cost us the match and it cost us the tournament. Unfortunately, those things happen though. We wrestled them tough right to the end."

The 135-pound bout featured the War Eagles Hunter Hamilton against C-FP's Brayton Frasier.

The wrestlers battled to a 2-2 score through the first period with Hamilton getting the take down and Frasier a reversal.

The second period was interrupted twice for injuries to Frasier, but he trailed Hamilton 5-3 heading into the final two minutes. Hamilton picked up a reversal midway through the period and shot a take down on Frasier. In his attempt to bring Frasier to the mat, Hamilton lifted Frasier off the mat, and had him in his grasp when he brought him down. Frasier was shaken up by the move and unable to continue, giving Hamilton the victory and six team points.

Canajoharie-Fort Plain went on to win six of the next seven bouts to bring the team score to 36-30 in their favor. The War Eagles put Ryan Matuszak and Josh Jardine on the mat to accept forfeits at 96 and 103 to secure the 42-36 victory.

"What I was impressed about was after that match our kids didn't get down by that," Jones said. "We had to wrestle Cobleskill-Richmondville next and they are a tough team. We wrestled them well and then had to beat Berne-Knox-Westerlo, who is also a very tough team. I was pleased that the kids didn't have a let down and came back to continue to wrestle strong."

Five Canajoharie-Fort Plain wrestlers - Tim Sealey (130), David Wall (215), Joe Hecht (171) and Kenny Crouse (140) - completed the dual meet tournament with perfect 5-0 records.

Crouse also picked up his 100th career victory by accepting a forfeit in C-FP's second match of the day against Green Tech.

"Kenny had a key match today, beating Cecil Hayes (Hadley Luzerne-Lake George) by decision," Jones said. "That was a quality win for him."

Crouse trailed Hayes 3-1 heading into the third period but earned an escape and scored a take down with five-seconds remaining. Crouse and Hayes rolled out of bounds forcing a restart.

Hayes sprung to his feet from the bottom but Crouse brought him back to the mat to score the 4-3 decision and improve his season record to 11-3.

Crouse was selected C-FP's Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament, while Tim Goudas was the MOW for Hadley Luzerne-Lake George. Also earning MOW honors for their teams were Tajaye Davis (Taconic); Don Radliff (Cobleskill-Richmondville); Emagji Utsey (Green Tech) and Alex Delong (Berne-Knox-Westerlo).

Canajoharie-Fort Plain will return to the mat Wednesday night for a non-league match against host Broadalbin-Perth.
