MAYFIELD - More than 20 years of holiday tradition took over the Mayfield Fire House on Saturday night for Mayfield's annual holiday tree lighting.

From the fire house on North School Street, people were able to take horse-drawn sleigh rides, tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas, and, of course, watch the tree lighting.

Mayor Harvey Hart, a member of the Mayfield Community Group, also brought his own Christmas trees inside the fire house garage and decorated them.

"I think events like this are great for the whole community, especially for the kids," said Hart.

Lori Barton and Cheryl Stofa also are volunteers for the Mayfield Community Group, which was formed two years ago. The group helps put together events in Mayfield.

Throughout the evening, Stofa served desserts and warm beverages to residents as they came inside from the cold.

"We do Christmas, Easter, Halloween, pretty much any holiday," said Stofa.

Shortly after Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived by sleigh, it was time to light the tree in front of the fire house along with Hart.

After the tree lighting the children started to line up back inside, waiting to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas.

Evelyn Dopp, the mother of three children, has attended the Mayfield tree lighting for the past three years.

"This absolutely helps out the Mayfield community. The kids love it," she said.

While the children waited for their turn with Santa, there was live Christmas music being played by Luke Horst, a music teacher in the Mayfield Central?School?District. Horst had help from some children, as they sang their own renditions of Christmas music.

Stacy Playford and Greg Ashline were in attendance for the first time with their granddaughter Amaiah. The three were enjoying the refreshments and waiting to take their turn on the sleigh ride, which was sponsored by Fritz Ann Farms.

"I think this is wonderful, you can tell all the kids just love this," Playford said.

Hart said the event never gets old with all the help he receives.

"Everyone that contributes to this event is amazing," he said. "The firefighters, the volunteers and the whole town. Everyone does such a good job."
