Mrs. Ellaline ‘Ella’ F. Carpenter

Mrs. Ellaline "Ella" F. Carpenter, age 96, formerly of Mayfield, died peacefully on Monday, December 7, 2009, at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home, Gloversville.

She was born on August 22, 1913, in England, the daughter of the late Ernest and Charlotte Doane Harrington. During World War II, she worked for the Pond's Hand Cream Company in England. She was married to William Chard, who predeceased her.

Ella came to Albany, New York, from England in 1958. She worked as a receptionist/switchboard operator for the American Red Cross in Albany for 19 years. She married Charles A. Carpenter on September 12, 1959. Ella and Charles came to Mayfield in 1986. They attended the Mayfield United Methodist Church. Although she was legally blind, Ella loved to travel and go fishing with her husband. She enjoyed listening to talking books and the television.

Survivors include: two nieces and a nephew, Diane McGuire (John) of Edinburg, N.Y., Brian Hunter of Unionville, Conn., and Iris Cooper (Derek) of Lindsey, Ontario, Canada; and several grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 1991; and by her sister, Charlotte Rose Hunter, in 1999.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, December 10, 2009, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Jerry Oliver officiating. Interment will take place in the springtime at Union Rural Cemetery, Mayfield. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Red Cross, 33 Everett Rd., Albany, N.Y. 12005 or to the charity of your choice.
