Gillibrand, Tonko say local area looks poised for economic growth

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y, discussed the potential for economic development in the region and touched on some local issues - including the struggles of dairy farmers and the stalling of the proposed Walmart Supercenter - as part of her quick tour of the area Saturday.

Gillibrand, along with U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-Amsterdam, stopped by the Fulton County Courthouse in Johnstown to discuss the potential for manufacturing and technology businesses to locate to the area.

Tonko introduced Gillibrand and said the area is poised for economic growth. He praised Fulton-Montgomery Community College for developing a nanotech program with clean room technology, and said with development on either side of the area, Fulton and Montgomery counties are in the middle of a great opportunity to grow in manufacturing and agriculture as well.

Gillibrand said the area has a strong manufacturing history and a well-trained workforce eager for jobs. She agreed with Tonko's assessment that the area is poised for economic growth.

"We have the will," she said. "We are very good at creating things."

She was welcomed by Amsterdam Mayor Ann Thane, Gloversville Mayor-elect Dayton King and Johnstown Mayor Sarah Slingerland, as well as members of the Fulton County Board of Supervisors. Outgoing Broadalbin town Supervisor Lee Hollenbeck questioned Gillibrand on the availability of stimulus funds for the area.

Gillibrand acknowledged that federal dollars are slow to arrive, but said her office is eager to help upstate municipalities apply for state and federal grants. She said there is financing available for a lot of projects, particularly ones focused on green energy and industrial development.

"We want to be your partner with this," she said. "I'm trying to make it as simple as possible. We can work with you on getting those [grant] applications done."

Johnstown resident John Bender questioned Gillibrand on what she is doing to help struggling dairy farmers across the state. Gillibrand said the plight of dairy farmers, who are consistently paid less for milk than what it costs to produce it, is an important one.

"It's absurd," she said of milk pricing methods. "Our dairy farmers are barely surviving right now."

Gillibrand, who is on the Senate's agriculture committee, said she wants the pricing system for milk to be revamped within the next four years.

"There is something wrong somewhere in the system [of price setting] and I plan on finding it," she said.

Gloversville 3rd Ward Supervisor Michael Gendron asked Gillibrand if she could aid Fulton County's two cities and the town of Johnstown in bringing the proposed Walmart Supercenter to the area. Plans for the project have stalled with the city of Johnstown's refusal to provide sewer to a number of parcels next to the site for the store.

Gillibrand said the area needs more businesses and said she would be happy to facilitate a meeting of all the involved parties. Tonko agreed and said he would try to help as well.

On a brief visit to Amsterdam, Tonko and Gillibrand joined Thane as she showed the pair plans for a pedestrian bridge across the Mohawk river. Gillibrand called the three bridge options "beautiful" and she would again lend her office's help in getting the area some funding to develop the space around the bridge.

What makes me just wast to smash my brains in is taht there is a bridge across Lake Champlain that because of neglect and lack of funding is going to be blown up and removed and a new bridge built over the next two years. People now have to take a ferry to work. AND WE ARE STILL TALK ABOUT A PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE ACROSS THE MOHAWK FOR $13 MILLION!!!!!!!!! JUST SO PEOPL CAN WALK ACROSS THE RIVER!!!!!!! This is why the world hates us.

If you are referring to the side walks on Route 30 in Amsterdam, they reside in the Town of Amsterdam which is a different muncipality than the City of Amsterdam. The Town is being mandated by the State DOT to keep the side walks clear.

Gillibrand is nothing more of the same lip service like all the rest - get real lady - bridges for pedestrians - get working on some industry and help for the dairy farmers ......

Ahhh...Bush's Fault. When all arguments fail, blame it on Bush or attack the posters. I'm waiting for the two to give some help for upstaters. And waiting, and waiting........did I mention waiting?

Everytime I see Tonko, all I can think of is the wasted sidewalks that were put in on Amsterdam's Route 30. Is anybody ever really going to use the sidewalks up there? I don't know maybe I'm wrong but Tonko certainly gave himself a pat on the back for digging up the money for them. How does anybody else feel about those sidewalks?

OMG, It is hard to believe all these promises are being made during a recession, like our government isn't enough in debt, and the politicians don't miss a beat but results are what matters and there have been none....from Hiliary down on.....How she was going to improve the economy in upstate...****e on what did she do for us? We get warehouses & warehouses...Not exactly a promising future for our children.

So now the Postal System is the new business model to follow ... and to think for all these years we were fooled into thinking it was dopey for someone in Gloversville to send a letter to their cousin in Broadalbin via Albany. The new Schumer-approved Sen. Gillibrand (D-NY), sounds about right when she says,"We are very good at creating things." Does this cover our Progressive ideologues?

The Postal Service hasn't received a tax payers' subsidy since 1971. They function completely on the money they take in for stamps and delivering packages. Their biggest losses occurred under the postal board of governors that was hand picked by GWB. The postal services' losses subsidized the large profits made by the mailing industry. That is, until the last administration crashed the economy. Al, is that what you call it, " pulling the wagon?" Posting while you are being paid to work by the taxpayers is a might tiny wagon to pull. I never heard goofing off at work being called pulling the wagon before.

The entitlement's addicts who post here regularly may not understand that government price controls over milk only work for people such as yourselves who get your foodstuffs from the rest of us. Those of us pulling the wagon are sick and tired of more and more people piling in.

Just a comment ... Looks like Hillary must of left a couple of the old pants suits in the office closet for ol' Kirsten ... Paul Tonko looks like he just stepped out of the Barney Frank Spa, Dayton appears to be holding his clip on tie down so it doesn't roll up and hit him in the chin ... and who is that in the corner lookin' like some one just spit in the corn flakes, is that Ben Franklin - oh, my mistake looks like good old pull the rug out Slingerland.

The government run Post Office needs a 4 Billion bail out this year. Yea, I want government health care. Keke (formally known as Kirsten in Upstate NY) gets to Washington and now has to come back to "look good" to her constituents.

Pillpopper, opps I mean Hilltopper. {Sorry for the mistake but your incessant posts and re-posts of progressive talking points and inaccurate analogies makes one wonder if you may have overdosed at the MSNBC apothecary}

What ills the Health Care system may not need a complete overhaul. Might need more than a tune-up, but no need to change the engine.

Here's one example of what I mean. Medicare and Medicaid are programs rife with fraud and abuse. If we make an honest effort to eliminate waste here the proposed cuts may not be necessary and these programs could be "reasonably expanded" to fulfill their original purposes. It would be refreshing to discuss these issues without the usual Fox v NBC, Right v Left, Demacan v Republicrat nonsense. Sorry about the introductory comment, but I already sent the post.

The visits by these "government representatives" were announced in a news brief in the "Leader" some days ago. The problem is they don't want to talk with the public, especially if they are not allowed control over questions .... and as you can see they really have very few answers. The recipe is two parts talk about a rosy future plus three parts promises add a dash of gosh we feel sorry for [insert complaining constituents] one teaspoon it was Bush/Chaney/Republicans that caused all this pain, stir, place in oven and run like*****for Washington.

If you are against government health care reform, over 65 years of age and receiving medicare health benefits, I make the following proposal. As a symbol of your resolve against government health care reform, tear up your medicare card and refuse any government assistance or interference with obtaining medical care. You will then be able to show by example just how easy and affordable it is to receive medical care on your own, with none of that nasty government interference. If you are under 65, and against health care reform, urge your elderly relatives to refuse medicare assistance because you know what is best, and YOU can pay their medical expenses out of YOUR own pocket. To use your argument, why should I pay for their health care ?

There you go, your elected officials show up and make promises. that should keep the local economy moving huh!! Maybe Slingerland should have skipped the meeting and the photo op . He time would be better spent calling Wal-Mart and begging!!!
