EDC still seeking Empie Estates project developer
By MICHAEL ANICH, The Leader-HeraldJOHNSTOWN - The Crossroads Incubator Corp. - the real estate component of the Fulton County Economic Development Corp. - continues to market a condominium project in the southern part of the city for development.
CIC Board of Directors President Joyce Royal told the Fulton County Development Corp. board last week at the Holiday Inn that a developer is still being sought for Empie Estates, a 30-unit project.
The city Planning Board gave final approval March 3 to the Empie Estates condominium project, which is expected to be on property bordered by Union Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue and Chestnut Street.
Condos would sell for about $100,000 to $200,000 each, and the units would range from 650 square feet for a one-bedroom unit and 1,850 square feet for a two-bedroom unit, city planning officials heard earlier this year.
In other reports given to the EDC board, Fulton-Montgomery Community College President Dustin Swanger said enrollment figures for the fall were up by a "strong" 15 percent and that strength is expected to carry through the winter session. He said FMCC still is exploring new housing for the campus for fall 2010.
"We're sliding into the end of the semester," Swanger said. "Its been a busy time for us."
He said FMCC also is looking at other "off campus" sites because there might not be enough space at the Route 67 main campus if the college continues to grow. He said FMCC has been one of the fastest growing colleges in the state.
"It's a good problem to have," Swanger said.
Swanger also gave an update on the Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery Business Alliance, which he said has launched a Web site. He said the alliance is working "very hard" on some teacher-training initiatives.
The board accepted the resignation of Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery Board of Cooperative Educational Services Superintendent Geoffrey Davis as an EDC board member.
EDC Treasurer James Del Savio reported the executive committee reviewed a "clean audit" of the EDC books.
EDC Chief Operating Officer Michael Reese reported the state-designated Gloversville Empire Zone, due to expire, had one application for benefits submitted to the state in October. He said the unnamed company wants to purchase an existing zone business, but he hasn't heard anything new from the state.
Reese also said he attended a training session in Albany for new zone coordinators.
