Asbestos removal planned

Johnstown accepts low bid of $5,400

By MICHAEL ANICH, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: November 18, 2009

JOHNSTOWN - The Common Council this week approved a low bid for asbestos removal at a city-owned property on Washington Street.

The city wants to raze the building to make way for future development.

Dakota Environmental Services of Boonville, Oneida County, submitted the low bid of $5,400.

The bid was one of seven the city received for asbestos removal at the 10 Washington St. property. The highest bid was $7,200.

City Engineer Chad Kortz said the city is happy with the low bid.

"We haven't gotten many asbestos bids in a long time," Kortz said. "There's not a lot of that work out there. ... They [Dakota] were hungry."

City officials previously determined it's necessary to demolish the building. C.T. Male Associates of Latham did pre-demolition and asbestos surveys. Officials said asbestos must be removed before demolition.

In other business Monday:

The council voted to sell city-owned property at 20 Water St. to Mike Peters, who made an offer of $3,500?

The council approved six events to be put on the city's liability insurance policy for 2010. The events, sponsored by the Johnstown Business and Professional Association, are Mother's Day Tea, Spring Fling Market, Colonial Stroll, Fall Festival, a car show and a motorcycle show.

I would have removed that asbestos for $5,000 with a dusk mask a water bottle and a hammer LOL gave you back the $5,000 bought the house rehabbed it and "rent to own" it to an under privileged family for less than their current rent. There's pride and security in home ownership. Oh was this about asbestos LOL Yeah get that done but if that doesn't work out give me a holler LOL !! .

Since the effects of asbestos inhalation usually take 30 years to develop, how about some volunteers ? Any takers, Discobulous ?

What a croc. A couple good ole boys, a case of beer, a couple shovels and a pickup truck could do the job. Asbestos is wonderful stuff - people got paid to put it in 40 years ago and now they're getting paid more to truck it out.
