John D. Moynehan

Mr. John D. Moynehan, 92, of Johnstown, N.Y., passed away at his home on Nov. 11, 2009. He was born on Nov. 21, 1916, in Johnstown, the son of John D. and Almeda Frederick Moynehan. He was a graduate of Johnstown High School and a 1939 graduate of Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass. Mr. Moynehan served in the U.S. Armed Forces; he served one year in the infantry, and three and one half years in the Army Air Force. He served with the 15th Air Force in the Mediterranean Theater and was a ball turret gunner for more than 50 missions over Germany. Mr. Moynehan received the following medals and commendations: The American Defense Service Medal, EAME Campaign Clusters, with 5 bronze stars, the Air Medal, with 4 oak leaves, the Distinguished Unit Badge and the Certificate of Commendation for Valor. In 1945, he joined, as a partner, A. Frederick and Co., distributor of fuel oil products. In 1955 he became President of the company and introduced Ready-Mix concrete to the area and expanded this area of the business. As President of A. Frederick, Inc., he was integrally involved in purchasing, selling, job planning, financial, personnel, union negotiations and public relations. Mr. Moynehan was a member of St. Patrick's Church and The Knights of Columbus. He served 6 years on the Board of Directors of the Johnstown YMCA and also served on the Board of Directors of the Empire State Sand and Gravel Assoc. He served as an agent for the Class of 1939 Holy Cross College Helps in Fund Raising and interviewed prospective candidates of admission. Mr. Moynehan was united in marriage, Dec. 26, 1941, to the former Catherine Roddy, who passed away Aug. 23, 2000. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Moynehan, of Johnstown; two sons, John D. Moynehan Jr., of New Port, R.I. and David J. Moynehan of New York City, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara Moynehan. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Ehle Funeral Home, 15 N. William St. Johnstown, N.Y. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Church. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
