Police following leads in robbery
By MICHAEL ANICH, The Leader-HeraldJOHNSTOWN - City police say Thursday's armed robbery at a convenience store is still under investigation, but some progress has been made in the case.
"We've had about a half a dozen leads," Police Chief Gregory Horning said Tuesday. "A couple of them are real good leads."
Horning couldn't be reached this morning, but a desk sergeant said today no arrest has been made yet and officers continue to investigate the incident.
Police said a masked robber made off with about $1,000 in cash after displaying a gun at about 6 p.m Thursday at the Daily Mart, 464 N. Perry St. Police said a white man wearing blue jeans, a brown sweatshirt and a green vest displayed what looked like a semi-automatic pistol and demanded the cashier hand over money.
Fulton County District Attorney Louise K. Sira said today she has no new information to release, concurring with Horning's assessment that leads continue to be followed. She said that if an arrest is made, the suspect may be charged with first- or second-degree robbery. She said the prosecution might be similar to the Mark B. Miller case.
Miller, 41, of 289 Hoesville Road, Galway, was sentenced Sept. 18 in Fulton County Court to 12 years in state prison for the October 2008 gunpoint robbery of the Hess Mart gas station in Perth. Authorities said Miller used a handgun to hold up the gas station and steal several hundred dollars from the store's safe. In July, a jury convicted Miller of second-degree robbery and other charges.
In last week's Johnstown holdup, police said the cashier was the only person in the Daily Mart when the man entered. Police think the robber took off on foot and may have gotten into a vehicle after running some distance. The city's police dog, K-9 Spike, was brought to the scene, but he was unable to track the man.
After the incident, store employee Cynthia Ashcroft said there have been a few robberies over the years at the Daily Mart store.
Police said they have security video footage from the store, but Horning said Tuesday he couldn't release it to the media yet.
"That's being reviewed," the chief said, noting other videos from neighboring businesses also are being looked at.
Anyone with information regarding the case, which will be kept confidential, may call Johnstown police at (518) 736-4021; or the Fulton County Crime Tips Hotline at (518) 736-5561.

I think it's nice that police are following leads. After all, that's what leads are for.
