CLIFTON PARK - The Gloversville-Mayfield, Fonda-Johnstown and

Amsterdam girls swim teams turned in solid performances at the Section II championships Saturday at Shenendehowa High School.

The Lady Sea Dragons placed third and FoJo seventh in the Section II Division II championships. Both teams improved over their fourth- and 10th-place finishes in the 2008 team standings. Amsterdam finished 11th in the team standings.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake won the Division II title with 548 points, followed by Queensbury (317), Gloversville-Mayfield (284), Glens Falls (229), Scotia-Glenville (178), Troy (141), Fonda-Johnstown (124), Albany Academy (105), Emma Willard (84), Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (76), Amsterdam (73) and Tamarac (43).

Three girls won berths in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet Nov. 20 and 21 in Webster.

Fonda-Johnstown's Meghan Bartlet won the Division II diving championship with a score of 405.35 to qualify for the state meet. Gloversville-Mayfield's Jade Woodend qualified in the 100-yard butterfly, while Justine Woodend qualified in the 100- and 50-yard freestyle.

"Jade got in the state meet earlier this season, which was our first, but getting her twin sister Justine in for two events just blew us away," Gloversville-Mayfield coach Mike Harrington said. "These two ladies never stop surprising us. They just rise up against the competition and swim faster."

Jade Woodend was also voted by the coaches as the section's Most Valuable Swimmer.

The Lady Sea Dragons set 10 school records at the sectional meet.

Jordan Capobianco, Kate Conrad, Jade Woodend and Mary-Kate Poulin set a new mark for the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:00.72. Victoria Blakeslee, Poulin, Leah Komp and Justine Woodend broke the 400 free relay record with their time of 3:52.38, while Jade Woodend, Komp, Blakeslee and Justin Woodend established a new record in the 200 free relay with a 1:44.02.

Blakeslee set records in the 200 freestyle (2:04.54) and 500 freestyle (5:34.70). Jade Woodend set records in the 200 individual medley (2:18.84) and 100 butterfly (1:00.86). Justine Woodend broke the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle records with times of 25.36 and 55.24, respectively. Conrad broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke with her time of 1:15.05.

"This group of girls is one of the finest teams I have had the honor of coaching," Harrington said. "What they achieved this year is a testament to their work ethic. It is a tough program and to get through it is justification for an award, but to get through it and wake up a whole section to Gloversville/Mayfield swimming and diving, that is beyond special."

FoJo swimmers turned in their fastest times of the season at the competition.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Bartlett, Elizabeth Havlicek, Hannah Palsgraf and Erica Askew placed sixth with their time of 2:05.19. They backed up that finish with a seventh place finish in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:53.04.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Samantha Sweet, Colleen White, Nicolette Angioli and Susie Freeman finished 10th in 4:50.61

Palsgraf finished ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:07.97) and 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:09.75). Havlicek placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.46) and 15th in the 100 freestyle (1:02.51).

Askew placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:20.54.

"I am very proud of all the girls and their accomplishments this season," Fonda-Johnstown coach Julianna Frederick said. "It is encouraging that all of the girls who swam here will be back next year. We strive for improvement every year. This has been by far the most successful season we have had since I took over as swim coach in 2007. It is exciting to think about what the future will hold, especially with a solid core group of girls returning for next year. These girls are a testament to the fact that hard work and dedication produces results. Their hard work and dedication will be an integral part of the continued rebuilding of the program."
