Robinson victor in at-large contest
With new mayor, official seeks to ‘rekindle the city’By KAYLEIGH KARUTIS, The Leader-Herald
GLOVERSVILLE - Third Ward Councilman James Robinson easily claimed victory in the three-way councilman-at-large race Tuesday.
Robinson defeated 2nd Ward Councilman John Castiglione, a fellow Republican, and 6th Ward Councilman Ray Hindes, a Democrat.
According to unofficial results from the Fulton County Board of Elections, Robinson received 1,131 votes. Hindes drew 732 votes, while Castiglione garnered 719.
Robinson is in his second term as a councilman, while Castiglione and Hindes are both in their first terms.
Robinson said he wanted to thank city residents for electing him and he hopes to act quickly to "reunite" the city.
"Now we have a way of bringing our city back together," he said.
Defeated mayoral candidate Dirk Myers expressed interest in being appointed to Robinson's 3rd ward seat on the council. Robinson will have a vote in deciding who fills the seat and said he would definitely consider Myers.
"The door is open," he said.
Robinson said he thinks he and Mayor-elect Dayton King will make a good pair to lead the city.
"I feel very confident working with him," he said. "I feel our youth and enthusiasm together can rekindle the city."
As councilman-at-large, Robinson said he hopes to bring trust and confidence back to city government.
Castiglione congratulated Robinson on his win and said he wishes him the best of luck. He said with two more years as a councilman, he will continue to "do the best [he] can for [his] constituents."
He said he doesn't know what he will do in the long term.
"After those two years, I'm not sure what I'll do," he said.
Castiglione said he would not change anything about the race, but he does plan on re-evaluating his demeanor as a councilman. He said his outspoken positions on a number of city issues may have harmed his efforts to become councilman-at-large.
Hindes agreed with Castiglione, saying he wishes Robinson luck as councilman-at-large.
"I hope he can do the job the way it should be done," he said.
Hindes said the outcome will not affect his role as 6th ward councilman.
"I plan on continuing to do my homework and doing what's best for the city," he said.

I've been following Gloversville politics and the People of Gloversville made the right choice with James Robinson. If I still lived in Gloversville, I would have voted for him. Way to represent Bo!
