Skoda secures Family Court post

Sitting?judge tops challenger Clo

By ZACH SUBAR, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: November 4, 2009

JOHNSTOWN - Fulton County Family Court Judge Edward F. Skoda's victory over Gloversville City Attorney John N. Clo appears to have been decisive in the race for a 10-year term on the Family Court bench.

The results are not yet official, and an election machine problem has prevented results in five towns from being counted. As of Tuesday night, however, Skoda led Clo 5,647 to 2,056.

Votes still need to be tabulated in places where voting machine glitches caused a delay: Bleecker, Broadalbin, Northampton, Oppenheim and two of Perth's four districts.

Fulton County Deputy Republican Election Commissioner Linda Madison said scanners in some machines froze up Tuesday, which prevented votes from being counted automatically.

A court order related to the 23rd Congressional District special election, however, prohibits any votes in the district from being counted by hand. Therefore, results from those towns, which all are in the 23rd District, are unknown today.

A total of 944 absentee ballots also have been sent out in the county, and those will be counted within the next week.

Barring a stunning turn of events, however, Skoda, a Republican, will continue to serve as the county's Family Court judge. He was nominated to the post earlier this year by Gov. David Paterson after former Family Court Judge David F. Jung was removed from the bench last fall by the state Court of Appeals. The state Commission on Judicial Conduct determined Jung had violated the rights of some individuals in Family Court cases.

At a Republican Party gathering at the Townhouse restaurant on Tuesday night, Skoda said he was humbled by the results.

"It's pretty nice to know that the people supporting you are looking forward to you being in the position," he said.

He said the campaign season has been long, but he has enjoyed meeting many county residents. He said he will effectively continue the work he has been doing on the bench.

"You just keep working at it through experience and try and give all the litigants their day in court and be fair and impartial when you're doing it," he said. "And hopefully make [what is] a lot of times a bad experience as good as it possibly can be."

Clo ran on the Independence ticket and the Conservative line after Skoda defeated him in September's Republican primary. He defeated Skoda in the Conservative primary in September.

"Certainly, I congratulate Judge Skoda on his victory," Clo said Tuesday. "And I thank my wife and my family and my many, many volunteers who helped me so much on my campaign," he said. "It has been a blessing and an amazing experience. I look forward to doing it again soon."

Clo said he could see himself running for another judicial post in the future, or any position where his qualifications "would best serve the public."

The position of Family Court judge pays $136,700 annually.

Constantine-I just read your last three posts. Senseless!! You have lacked schooling in the art of comprehension. You must have something to hide so now you can hire your lawyer friend to defend you. The justice system works, try it, you may like it!

IndyIrish / FightingJones...you two have already proven your ignorance and lack of courage, i.e. only screennames, evading my questions and direct to the point comments...say what you wish, I don't care, you can blog, I can blog, but unless you two have intelligence to bring to the forefront I'm done w/this issue...I refuse to lower my standards...

IrishCream...I don't know what to say to someone who is among those that present a strong argument for bringing back the practice of Lobotomy...Funny how you hide behind a screen name and evade the issues and challenges...Once again, my real name is Constantine and I have no issues talking face to face...I see too that you are too chicken to accept my little bet on a beer in the future...does that lack of courage lend a peek into the future of how long Ed Skoda stays on the bench...

IndyJane...Grow up, and wake up...I have no fright what so ever...and your ignorance shows as you totally missed my point...I'm not even going to repeat myself, you are a true candidate for electroshock therapy...or are you making the point that those who opposed Skoda will be screwed over in court and end up in jail for exercising their First Amendment Rights of Freedom of Choice / Expression...So I exercise the right to choose my candidate, I challenge someone who makes himself seem he knows Skoda very well and I need jail time...I have no Family Court issues I was asking the question...anyone w/an IQ of 2 could understand that...

Another stupid post by Constantine the last standing "Greek" or I mean "GEEK". The people you mention are in another level in Amserican History. Your friend is a loser and ran probably the worst election campaign in the history of Fulton County, since when he announced in January!! He never made it to the big leagues and the voters surely consider him still a minor leaguer and never a factor in the race by the vote he collected!!

FightingIrish, cool your jets will ya...Once a loser, always a loser?, Does Ronald Reagan ring a bell, remember he lost one, if not two, primaries before bursting on the American History scene as one of our greatest Presidents...William Jennings Bryan lost three Presidential elections but is regarded as one of the finest orators in American History - thats FAR from being a loser...if I'm over your head on this one, I'm sure you can handle Google and are capable of searching for Ronald Reagan and William Jennings Bryan...George Washington at Valley Forge didn't look good for a while either, again Google...I hope Ed Skoda succeeds AND keeps his word, but it's a bet I'm willing to take w/you...if he retires prior to age 70 you buy the beer...at 70 I buy the beer...Now, I supported my friend,Clo...I'm divorced - If I go into Skoda's court, will I get a FAIR and BALANCED session, or will my freedom of choice work against me?

gvillesccr20---since you have all the answers you must be a relative of the defeated candidate. I'd be willing to bet that Judge Skoda will remain on the bench for his full term as he has stated. When a vacancy occurs, the voters of Fulton County won't even give the defeated candidate a second look. Once a loser always a loser. What happened to your candidate after the primary election--he disappeared and furthermore never even had the decency to thank the primary voters for the votes he got. Don't take the voters for granted. There will be some strong possibilities once the term of the Family Court Judge is up and again it won't be your relative. Losers never win and quitters never win! Stick to being a soccer mom!

@ tinbucktoof - guess you are too young to remember, or never heard about, that infamouse headline...or maybe you live on Fantasy Island.

@ IndyJones - how is it you (and the rusted roof) know how many votes were cast when the machines, and ballots in them, were all locked and have yet to be counted?

As soon as Skoda secures his retirement, he will have a "family issue" and step down. I say about 3-4 years. It was ONLY about the retirement and NEVER about doing a job that that will now be wasted on someone who bought the election and could care less about Family Law! I guess the next time it is Clo's turn, but he will deserve it!

An outstanding individual (Judge Skoda) was elected by the voters of Fulton County on Election Day. I myself voted for him and wish him the best of luck in a most difficult job. His campaign was one of the best I ever witnessed in the history of Fulton County. He brings much experience, integrity and compassion to Family Court.

oldskool, are you serious? You don't think this is going to play out in those townships the same way it did in all of the other districts?? This was over before it started!!!

Just curious - how can this be called "Skoda secures Family Court post" when thousands of votes have not even been counted yet? if it was one polling stations perhapd, however five towns is potentially a lot of votes. And considering we were all todl out votes would be "counted by hand" last night but this article says "A court order related to the 23rd Congressional District special election, however, prohibits any votes in the district from being counted by hand." make me wonder if the entire election will have to be redone.
