Every vote important

POSTED: November 1, 2009

In September's local primary elections, a couple of races were so close, they had to be decided by absentee ballots. Elections that come down to a difference of a few votes aren't too unusual in small communities. That's why it's especially important for all voters to get to the polls. Every vote indeed counts. Yours could be the decider.

On Tuesday, voters will have a chance to carry out their duty to elect candidates for public office in the general elections. It's been a particularly busy campaign season. Among the contested races are those for Gloversville mayor and councilman-at-large, Johnstown mayor and councilman-at-large, Fulton County Family Court judge, Fulton County treasurer, Gloversville 4th Ward supervisor, and several town supervisor seats in Fulton and Montgomery counties. There's also a contested race for state Supreme Court justice and for congressman in the 23rd congressional district, which includes Hamilton County and part of Fulton County.

We encourage voters to consider this newspaper's endorsements in some of Tuesday's races. We've endorsed Ed Skoda for Family Court judge, James Callery for Fulton County treasurer, Sarah Slingerland for Johnstown mayor, Jo-Ann Clear for Gloversville mayor, Francis Caraco for Johnstown councilman-at-large and James Robinson for Gloversville councilman-at-large.

The winners of Tuesday's municipal elections will have an effect on public policies and ultimately the lives of the area's citizens. It's in everyone's best interests to vote.

In other words the "private" area to vote was not very "private" at all with the line of people waitng to vote being able to see one side of the "private" voting area and the line of people waiting to place their forms into the machine being able to see the other side of the "private" area. And both lines being able to see what people who had already voted did by simply looking at the completed form in their hands.

Well for those you us who had to vote using the "new" method how was it? I can tell you that for me it not private and not very, I guess "new" for lack of a better term. This "new" method, at least where I vote, consisted of being handed a heavy stock piece of paper and told to fill in the little squares so they looked like the sample square. We were told to fill it "all" in, to not go "outside of the box" and to "not even drop the pen" because doing any opf those things would cause our vote to not be counted. We then took a few steps over to a line, right next to the machine were you were supposed to place the forms into, where one could easly see what people finshed voting had voted for as they placed their forms into the machine and also what th eunlucky people standing with their back or side to the line were voting for. In other words the "private" area to vote was not very "private" at all with a li

First "Cheers" to all those who will actually go out and vote.. regardless whom you choose to vote for. Your vote is your voice! "People often say that, in a democracy, decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote -- a very different thing." ~ Walter H. Judd

I am casting my vote for Dayton King. I hope you will too.

The city will not recover anyway. Perhaps tearing it down is necessary before putting it back together again. It works for engines.

The City was broke when she left office as finanace commissioner. The YWCA was broke when she was fired from that position. She will not build the City. She will tear it down. The City will not recover if she is elected.

citizen60, Not getting elected in the past is not failure as an elected official. I agree with the comments that you have used to try to use as an excuse to not vote for her. She is the best candidate by far, it is just too bad the water is so muddied that we will likely not get to see her elected. Backing out of a race in consideration of your party is an honorable decision but I understand your disappointment not having an independent on the ticket.

I'm not concerned with how any candidate failed in the past. I'm only trying to guess which one can succeed in the future.

Jo-Ann Clear was the Endorsed Conservative and Republican candidate in 1989. She lost the Republican primary. She then quit the campaign altogether and left the Conservative party without a candidate. The Conservative party will never forgive her for that. NO Republican candidate has ever won the election for Mayor in Gloversville since then without the Conservative endorsement.

Here are Jo-Ann's comments from the Foothills Church meeting on June 14, 2006, a mere three years ago:

Doesn't believe in zero tolerance blight, Need to examine the definition of blight. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Zero tolerance is a hard distinction

Consolidate the police investigative procedures at the county level

Police overtime budgets-believes if officers go on vacation, Sheriff's department can cover

Thinks we can reduce the fire department's size as well-even go to volunteer fire departments, but must be a grassroots effort to avoid union busting.

Wants county to do Gloversville assessing.

Enough said, there is much more.

OK I will bite, how did Jo-Ann fail in the past? Was she the mayor, was she the boss? So who do you feel is the best choice. Judy? Her own party does not endorse her, Dayton? A man who has already lost the republican vote and so decided that maybe just maybe a few independents will vote for him and maybe with his acceptance of the former mayors money a few democrats. Or Dirk He may be a good choice but he has not made enough noise to be heard. That leaves on good choice and it is Jo-Ann, chosen by the LH as the best choice. And is the best option we have to get things pointed in the right direction.

A vote for Joann Clear is a vote for the same old same. After all she has been there before and failed to improve anything. In fact, she made things worst, and we are still paying for her past mistakes. o we want to give her another chance to close the doors. If so, we should have kept Hughs.

FC Democrats endorse candidates No candidate was endorsed in the race for mayor of Gloversville. There are four candidates in the race - Democrat Judy Marcoux, Republican JoAnn Clear, Conservative Dirk Myers and independent Dayton King. Marcoux knocked Gloversville Mayor Tim Hughes out of the race with a win in the Democratic primary. An important democrat announcement we should heed! And BS baggins, our party seems to be the only major party that considers this countries interests at all, that is why we have to stick together.

The endorsement for Callery puzzles me, here the people have a chance to have a someone new, like Mr. Blodgett and the paper endorses a career politician.

Good Luck Dirk Myers and Doug Hoffman, the Conservative candidates. Could have two Conservatives in office in the region, Myers and Hoffman. That will change the political landscape.

A vote for Doug Hoffman will have national significance and is our chance to change the political landscape and shape of political debate. It is also a chance to "stick it to" turncoat John McHugh and the Good Ol' Boys that have kept us in the dark for years! In Gloversville you must vote for Jo Ann Clear or suffer more of the same old same old. Of course this would mean ignoring the all important pheasant vote.

Don't forget Doug Hoffman. A vote for Doug says we want real change, in the right direction. Smaller government will mean larger private industry and a more robust economy. Doug represents that sort of change
