Authorities probe Montgomery County DMV break-in

By KAYLEIGH KARUTIS, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: October 27, 2009

FONDA - Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a break-in that happened early Monday morning at the Montgomery County Department of Motor Vehicles office.

Deputies said they responded to the scene after DMV staff reported a large broken window and several missing items, including computer equipment, some cash and some DMV stickers. The break-in caused the office to be closed for several hours Monday morning.

Deputies said the break-in is suspected to have occurred between 1 and 6 a.m. Monday.

While the office is open today, officials there said DMV staff will be unable to process learners' permits, non-driver identification, drivers' licenses and enhanced drivers' licenses.

It's unclear when full services will become available, because officials there must replace the computer equipment that was stolen.

Montgomery County Undersheriff Jeffery T. Smith said his department is following up on several leads and is not releasing certain details of the crime, including the amount stolen and what evidence might have been left behind.

Smith said the Department of Motor Vehicles also is investigating the case. Anyone with information or tips about the incident are asked to call 673-2554, 853-5500 or 736-1850.

While the office replaces the stolen items, those in need of DMV services can perform some tasks on the Internet at the DMV Web site, www.nydmv.state.ny.us. Locations of other DMV offices can be found on the Web site as well.
