Town of Amsterdam eyes trash fee

By KAYLEIGH KARUTIS, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: October 26, 2009

AMSTERDAM - Town residents may face a new fee for trash removal next year, town officials said this morning.

The cost of trash disposal has about quadrupled in the past 10 years, Supervisor Thomas DiMezza said. The town has paid about $388,000 per year for trash disposal. The bill is expected to exceed $400,000 this year.

With costs rising, DiMezza said residents may face either a town property tax or an annual fee of $150 to cover the service.

DiMezza said he would prefer a $150 fee paid by users of the disposal service. With a fee, only those who use the service would have to pay. A property tax would affect all town residents.

"The people who will be paying [the fee] are the people who use the service," he said.

DiMezza said based on the rapidly increasing cost of disposal, he sees $150 as a reasonable request to make of town taxpayers, given they now pay no town property taxes or any fees for trash disposal.

The proposed fee was included in the 2010 budget. The budget stands at about $3.6 million and would decrease spending by about $8,000 over this year's budget.

Town Councilman Kenneth Krutz said he understands the need for some sort of revenue stream to cover the cost of trash disposal.

"There has been a huge increase in the cost," he said. "There is no question about that."

Krutz said he hopes the $150 fee can be reduced or eliminated before the budget is finalized.

"I'm hoping we can look at some things in the budget and if not eliminate [the disposal fee], at least lower it somewhat," he said.

Krutz said he has examined the budget and has found a few expenses that might be cut, which he plans to suggest to DiMezza and his fellow council members. Krutz said the next budget meeting will be Nov. 2.

Maybe we can get a government run option where we all get free trash removal! It wont cost the taxpayers a dime, I have read a lot about the health insurance public option and it will only cost the most wealthy people, not us! I say lets have them do that for everything! Free gas free electricity free everything!!! News flash, Nothing ever is free, we will not get free anything and the government knows how to spend! It is time to demand a stop to all of this hogwash and get down to the real work they are supposed to be doing.

Town of Amsterdam does collect property taxes from its residents...I am one of them. Half goes to county and half goes to town. They just raised my school tax here now they want more for my garbage, while residents are getting less hours or paycuts or flat out losing their jobs. It is a crime, they should do like we do. CUT SOMETHING OUT.

The same town that has left a mess on Clizbe Ave for the past 4 months wants more money? These incompetent fools should be replaced. The only trash I am willing to pay to get rid of is the incomptent trash that runs the Public Works department. Not a good idea to give people yet another reason to want to leave here....

MisterM - When do you move? Must have been some time ago. The trash cans used by County Waste have hinges and are attached to the can. They are also handled by a robotic arm on the truck. $150 per year - $2.88 to remove trash - not a bad deal.

RIDICULOUS! The town of Amsterdam trash service ***** anyway! When I lived in Amsterdam, those bozos would empty the trash and just give the cans a heave. They would always toss the tops of my trash cans & block the street! BOO! HISS! Half the reason I moved! DIMEZZA - Improve the way ya pick up trash or don't hold yer hand out!

That HAS to be an error or just plain misleading..I know of nowhere in NYS that doesn't pay any city or county taxes on a home..

Maybe its time people just stopped accumulating trash, or burned it illegally in back yard barrels like us sophisticated Fulton County people do. I trade my tin cans and glass jars to the Amish for bedding plants & the rest burns.
