Broadalbin starts building concession stand
Village Board overruled code officer on?projectBy ZACH SUBAR, The Leader-Herald
BROADALBIN - The village has almost finished building a concession stand at its ballfields on First Avenue, over the objections of its code enforcement officer, who previously denied a building permit for the work.
Village Mayor Eugene Christopher said the roughly 12- by 14-foot stand was built over two days last week. The building project was permitted after the Village Board passed a resolution at a special meeting earlier this month to overrule Code Enforcement Officer Ralph Preston Jr.'s denial of a building permit.
Preston, who could not be reached for comment this morning, had requested more information on the matter, saying he could not approve the project based on the plans that had been submitted.
A village attorney, however, recommended the town overrule that denial because the town wanted to build the concession stand before snow came. Construction has been quick since then.
"The building is up," Christopher said. "It's not complete yet, but it's enclosed."
Through its Hometown Heroes scholarship program, Lowe's has agreed to pay for the labor and construction costs associated with the project.
It will not be used until next spring. It will sell concession items to people who attend Broadalbin Youth Commission games or to anyone else who wants to purchase food or drinks there.
Plumbers, who donated their time to the project, helped install a sewer line to the stand last week.
"It's to give back to the kids," Christopher said. "That's the whole reason for it."

johnstownpd I agree with alot of what your are saying and thank you for your hard work and all the people who donated money and time. But who is the mayor to over ride the code enforcer. I think little league is a great thing and I'm glad the building was put up . But if the code enforcer refuses a permit the village has a board of appeals you have to go in front of (NOT IN THIS CASE THE MAYOR JUST SAID BUILD IT) And if the code enforcer has a question he shood know enough to place a call to someone that could assist him. And if he is not willing to do this then the mayor shood get rid of him as he is appointed.

Ok people listen up.. I am a Volunteer, and I helped build this concession stand. And for the record"EVERYTHING WAS DONATED AND THERE WAS NO LABOR PAID THIS WAS A TOTAL NON-PROFIT PROJECT" infact there was a good deal of money put into this buy the buider. And the reason the plans were denied in the first place was because the code enforcer did not know what a Alaskin slab is.The guy just don't know what he is doing.and also this this was built better than most homes today. So when people get out there and volunteer there time and money to do something good for their community, don't sit there on your lazy butts throwing smart mouth commments around. And be glad that someone else, that don't even live in your gripeing, complaining, crybaby town DID THIS FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The negative comments make me sick. Change in Broadalbin imagine that? For once the mayor did the correct thing. People need to relax its Little League baseball.

power hungry christopher over step his authority this time, is he trained and certified by the state to approve building plans just like other code officals, probabaly not and if the building is not being used til spring so what was the hurry, but i do agree that the kids should a concession stand, mayben christopher can over step the state again and make it so that we don't have to follow any rules when it comes to building anything and see what happens. Maybe the state should look into this matter and see if our government is really doing the right thing here.

Why was the project rejected before? Maybe there were Good reasons for turning it down. Maybe it will be an eyesore in the future. I guess the old adage "It is easier to ask forgivness, than to ask permission" applies

Christopher is at it again...does this mean that everyone else can build without a permit?? If it only took 2 days to construct and will not be used until Spring, they should have waited until all the information was submitted correctly. Not fair to everyone who does things the correct way.

Congrats. Some times we forget about why we are doing things and get caught up in the red tape. It is for the kids - as long as it is up to code...
