Cheers and jeers

POSTED: October 17, 2009

CHEERS - To the etiquette of a 10-year-old. A couple of weeks ago, The Leader-Herald was proud to bring to the area a free concert performed by the United States Air Force Band of Liberty. This thank you note, sent by a young member of the audience, is exactly the reason why we do it: "Thank you for bringing the United States Air Force Band of Liberty to Gloversville! I really enjoyed it. I love music and have played piano for six years, and just started flute. It was an awesome experience, and I really appreciate all the hard work you put into it. It was wonderful. Thank you. Rachel Rochet." Thank you, Miss Rochet. We are glad you enjoyed it, and good luck with your own musical talents.

CHEERS - To Marge DeBlock. The four H's in 4-H stand for Head, Hands, Heart and Health. No one has kept the pledge of clearer thinking, greater loyalty, larger service and living for the organization and the community than town of Palatine resident Marge DeBlock. She was recently recognized for her more than 50 years of service. When she says "it's all about the time spent just teaching the kids," her five decades of actions prove it. She will never know how many young people she has helped mold into good citizens. People like Marge are our communities' biggest assets.

JEERS - To lack of cash. For anyone who has thought that the concerns with the Hudson-River Black River Regulating District have nothing to do with you because you don't live near the Great Sacandaga Lake, think again. If you pay school taxes in the Broadalbin-Perth, Mayfield or Northville school districts, welcome to the neighborhood. The district is now saying it does not have the funds to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars owed to these local school districts. Well, cry us a river, but we agree with Broadalbin-Perth Superintendent Stephen Tomlinson, who said, "They're no different than any other taxpayer in our community." The taxes, the late fees - no exceptions, just like a regular taxpayer.

CHEERS - To an outstanding landscape. If you haven't had the opportunity to visit the Gloversville Farmer's Market or seen the pavilion, you have missed the latest enhancement to that area. Apparently, there are a couple of individuals who stepped forth, anonymously, and paid for the array of flowers and landscaping that now frames the area. It is a touch that gives an added reflection of the tremendous work that has been completed in the city. To any and all involved, we can't wait to see what is pictured and completed in the coming year.

Congratulations to Judge DeSantis and all involved for their efforts with the Gloversville Farmers' Market.

Maybe it's time the HRBRRD should sell it's million dollar mansion on the lake to pay it's taxes..

HRBRRD,along with some 700 other public authorities, are now under scrutiny by Albany which is working to pass a law to reform how these authorities operate. Accountability and fiscal responsibility would be paramount in this "new oversight". One can only hope - billions would be saved and New York State could be brought back from the brink of bankruptcy.

In regard to the Hudson-River Black River Regulating District, this is only the beginning. With Paterson's proposals we will all see a rise in taxes which will lead to more being unable to pay taxes in a timely fashion (or pay at all). All this will result in more teacher layoffs, larger class rooms, and cuts in programs. Am I for all that? No, but it is reality. I ask, how do the BP retirees think the district can afford their copays. But, hey lets just add on the expense of a lawsuit. TAKE TAKE TAKE - Remember now - It's all about the children.

Tomlinson might have said that they're no different than any other taxpayer and therfore deserve to be fleeced just as badly as the rest.
