Schools of Thought: The great underwear outrage
By BILL CAIN, The Leader-HeraldApparently, the picture of Johnstown volleyball player Angela Holliday going up for a spike against Gloversville in Thursday's edition of The Leader-Herald has caused quite a stir.
Scandal!
Outrage!
In the photo, Holliday is swinging away at a ball above her head, jumping to do so, and due to the laws of physics, her shirt has moved up far enough to expose her bare belly. It also drew the attention of several readers to the shorts Johnstown volleyball players wear.
They're made of Spandex, so they're skin-tight. They're also short.
Hence the term "shorts."
They're too short for some readers, who likened the outfit to underwear and want to know whose decision it was to order the outfits.
It's actually the same kind of bottom that every volleyball player wears. Anyone familiar with the game would know that, but these are not volleyball fans who are outraged, they are people who need their fix, need their Outrage of the Week.
The Johnstown girls - and all volleyball players - have been wearing these shorts for some time without drawing online rants about the scandalized eyes of certain readers.
Just looking back at this season, The Leader-Herald has covered eight volleyball matches and one tournament with no complaints before this.
Not when Gloversville and Fonda-Fultonville were featured in a photo from the tournament at Fulton-Montgomery Community College (Aug. 30 edition), not with the coverage of Mayfield against Gloversville (Sept. 9), Johnstown against Scotia-Glenville (Sept. 10), Broadalbin-Perth against Gloversville (Sept. 12), Mayfield against Fonda-Fultonville (Sept. 16), Johnstown against Broadalbin-Perth (Sept. 18), Johnstown against Queensbury (Sept. 25) or Gloversville against Fonda-Fultonville (Sept. 29).
Same kind of fabric, same amount of fabric.
Neither has there been any problem with the outfits worn by athletes in cross country or track and field, some of whom wear far less material below the waist than any volleyball player.
Of course, some people have more of a problem with the zebra print on the shorts than the amount of fabric used or not used to make them.
Once again, the Lady Bills have had these shorts and worn them before without any problem. There was no fuss raised when Johnstown started wearing the shorts.
Last season.
Now, though, I wouldn't be surprised if they are forced to change back to flat black. Not because they've done some horrible thing the administration was unaware of before this, but because it's easier to say, "Sorry girls, you've got to change," than it is to say, "Too bad, adults, they've done nothing wrong."
This would be unfortunate because the administration either complicitly or implicitly approved the use of these shorts, either by talking with the coaches and giving a flat out "OK," or by seeing them when the team started wearing them and finding nothing amiss. To go back on that decision because of the complaints of people who are not these girls' parents - and some of whom are not from the school district - would be a mistake and set a dangerous precedent.
I know, I know, some people look at any clothing with an animal-skin print on it and think those are patterns reserved for ladies of the night or upholstery in tricked-out Honda Accords with huge, unnecessary spoilers on the back.
Personally, I think it's ridiculous. I think they should get a cow print on their shorts just to see if that gets people upset, too.
And no, that's not me calling anyone fat.
But who knows what some pervert might see in that Rorschach blot on some girl's hip. So scrap that idea.
I was surprised the furor was over the size and decoration of the shorts and not Holliday's exposed midriff. I'm willing to bet her rolling the waistband down (which I'm told all players do because the waistband stretches and, when it does, this is the way to keep them tight around the waist since they can't wear a belt) made her shorts seem more skimpy than they are and fueled the fire.
So I implore you girls, just wear new shorts each match. To avoid such scandal, I'm sure the school would pay through the nose.
Just don't roll them down anymore. You're making the natives restless.

Oh good god who cares what they are wearing!! Seriously. If they were plain black would have all of these comments have been made? We shall see as there is a photo of a Mayfield player in today's paper whose shorts look like the ones Angela had on only there are plain black. They are just as short! And the photo is a side view as opposed to the more frontal view of the photo of the Johnstown player. I don't find either photo offensive in any way. And NO, they don't roll them to make them shorter!!!

It is all about accountability and who is held to it if the school did not supply the shorts.

nut...yes, as a taxpayer whose money goes towards funding these activities, I find them to be inappropriate...now that I read that the district didn't even supply them I have to wonder who and how decisions are being made.

Buckeye, weren't you the first one to post a comment under the volleyball story drawing the attention to the shorts?

chiseler...I went back and read the golf article...you nailed it on the head! There was no reason to mention why the student athelete had to withdraw unless the writer was trying to embarass him....you're a big man bill! The truth is, the LH and it's writers strive on scandal...been that way for years!

bill cain...the fact of the matter is,these "people who need their fix" as you call them, also happen to be taxpayers who foot the bill for these programs. It's insulting for you to dismiss reader's opinions in a sarcastic tone as you did. Try giving some substance once in a while instead of this garbage. I find it really weird that as an adult male, you are doing your column about girls high school athletics and using words like "exposed midriff" and "skimpy" when describing their shorts. Wow dude....you have some issues!

THE COACH ALLOWS IT!!! Let us not be fooled! Hey does anyone remember Mrs. Eddy! She would have croaked before she would allow us to wear our spandex that short and zebra print ~~ mama mia!!! Again, if the coach didn't allow them to roll the spandex this would not be an issue! I personally have not seen the johnstown squad play this year but people I know have and they say that in some cases you can see the girls underwear!!! Don't know if its true but hey! I honestly can not imagine wearing zebra stripes in public ever let alone something that is skin tight like spandex!!! BRAVE GIRLS VERY BRAVE!!!

I have also been around the sport of volleyball and this is the normal thing for these girls to be wearing. However, if you take notice (since it is clearly visible) she has rolled the top of the shorts so that the 2 to 5 inch spandex has now become more like 1 to 2 inches. This new way of wearing the spandex should be stopped by the coach or the parents. If I ever saw my daughter purposely make her shorts shorter than 2.5 inches I would probably be put behind bars for killing her. (just kidding) Since the parents allow it than it the blame/responsibility should fall on the coach. These girls are representing Johnstown High School and for the coach to allow them to disgrace the school and themselves like this is disguisting. Krusty Crab ~~ I think the whole jealousy thing is a bit far fetched. You guys have no idea who is posting this blog but yet you assume it the Gloversville team jealous of the looks of Johnstown players.

Come on Billy, they roll them over to make them even shorter!! According to posts from the article, that's what volleyball players wear, short shorts!!! You know in this day and age, they want them as short as they can get away with. This time they went too short with a questionable print for a school uniform!!!

Bill Cain, I guess your "outrage fix for the week" was writing about the Johnstown golfer who had to withdraw from the Foothills tournament. Please explain the need to include that in your story? I'm sure he was embarrassed enough by the incident. As for the shorts, if they are forced to stop wearing them, I highly doubt that it has anything to do with anyone's comments on the story. Rather, it seems more likely that your selection of what photo to put to press has brought it to the attention of others who were not aware of the shorts. Nice attempt at passing the buck! I heard today that the school district did not even provide these shorts for the team. Who's responsible for allowing that to happen?
