JOHNSTOWN - Local politicians, volunteers and business owners were recognized at the Fulmont Community Action Agency's 44th annual awards dinner Monday night at the Holiday Inn.

Longtime Republican Gloversville 4th Ward Supervisor Anthony "Chart" Buanno was recognized several times throughout the night. Buanno, a Fulmont board member, was given board member emeritus status. He is retiring from the agency's board after 42 years.

Buanno, 86, has been active in local politics since 1962. He plans to retire from public life in December.

Fulmont Executive Director Denis Wilson said Buanno has dedicated his life to serving the public.

"He's committed to the cause of helping the less fortunate in our counties," Wilson said while handing Buanno several plaques and awards. "We appreciate everything you've done for us."

At another point in the meeting, Buanno was honored by Jennifer Muthig, Regional Director for Gov. David Paterson's office. Muthig read a letter to Buanno from Paterson.

In the letter, Paterson commended Buanno on his "prolific career" and said his effect on the area has been profound. The audience - including Fulmont members and many local officials - rose in a standing ovation following the recitation of the letter.

A number of other people were recognized and commended for their contributions to the organization. Fulmont employee Beverly Ball was named employee of the year and was given, among other gifts, a certificate for one day off, with pay, and a plaque.

Gloversville 6th Ward Supervisor Richard J. Ottalagano was given the 2009 Anthony C. Buanno Award. Nathan Littauer Hospital and Nursing Home was recognized for its contributions to the agency, as were several corporate sponsors, including NBT Bank, the agency's primary underwriter.

Those who organized the Railfest in Gloversville, including Gloversville 1st Ward Councilwoman Robin Wentworth, 4th Ward Councilwoman Ellen Anadio and Nathan Littauer Vice President Sue Kiernan, were recognized as well. The Gloversville Railfest organization donated $5,000 of its proceeds from the August festival to support the operation of Fulmont's facility in Gloversville.

Beebie Printing and Art Agency was recognized as the printing underwriter for the event. Owner Craig Beebie said he and his wife are happy to lend a hand to the agency.

"Fulmont represents everything that is good in this world," he said. "Our community is a better place because of Fulmont."
