County seeks grant for OFA-DSS effort
New York Connects project would allow agencies to offer services jointlyBy MICHAEL ANICH, The Leader-Herald
JOHNSTOWN - Two Fulton County government departments plan to continue a partnership they started three years ago to provide the public with information and assistance for long-term medical and support services.
The Board of Supervisors last week voted to seek $63,000 in state grant funding to continue a relationship between the Office for the Aging and the county's social services unit.
"This is the joint application between the OFA and the Department of Social Services," county Administrative Officer Jon Stead told the board.
In 2006, supervisors authorized submittal and acceptance of an initial contract with the state Office for the Aging for what is known as the "New York Connects" Point of Entry System, which links the OFA and DSS to provide easy access to families and providers for various services.
DSS Commissioner Sheryda Cooper and OFA Director Andrea Fettinger were authorized to seek further funding through the state OFA and Department of Health to continue the program.
In other business last week:
The board approved the county signing a $321 settlement with the Dryden Mutual Insurance Co. for fire damage to the OFA roof on North William Street. The damage resulted from a large fire in which several old factories were destroyed on West State Street on April 24, 2008.
A $14,896 contract was awarded to Hi-Lite Markings of Adams Center, Jefferson County, for a pavement markings project planned for 2010 at the County Airport off Route 67.
The board passed a resolution in memory of former county Youth Bureau Executive Director John Weiss, who passed away Aug. 17. He was appointed in 1977 as the first director of the youth bureau and served for two years.
The board authorized advertisement for bids from municipalities for the sale of one leachate tanker in the Department of Solid Waste. The department has a 6,500-gallon leachate tanker that's no longer used and is seeking a minimum bid of $5,000 until Wednesday.
Supervisors authorized advertisement for bids for the Children With Handicapped Conditions Transportation Program through 2010. Bids are to be received by the county no later than Oct. 14.
