Melvin Wood Jr., 84, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Mt. Valley Hospice of congestive heart failure.

He was born July 7, 1925 to Melvin and Sadie (Wilson) Wood in Gloversville, NY. A life long resident of Fulton County, he retired from the General Electric Company after 38 years of employment. He was an Army Air Force Veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy from 1943 to 1946, being honorably discharged with several good conduct medals.

He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Marion (Short) Wood in 1995. Survivors include a daughter, Sherry Raskey (Jerry) of Wasilla, Alaska; and a son, Fred Wood (Beverly) of Baldwinsville, NY; two brothers, Donald (Dawn) Wood of Northville, Dean (Barbara) Wood of Quarryville, PA; and a sister, Marilyn Johnson (Vernon deceased) of Gloversville, NY; three granddaughters, Jaymie, Kelly and Crystal of Alaska; and three stepgranddaughters, Terrie, Tracy and Tiffany of Central New York; one great-granddaughter, Jaslynn of Wasilla, Alaska; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mel was a member of the Condordia Club, VFW, Moose Club and the GE Quarter Century Club. He was a lifelong hunter and fisherman, spending many hunting seasons with is brothers and hunting buddies in Gifford Valley and Warner Hill. He also enjoyed many years of playing golf with his gumbas.

The family will receive relatives and friends form 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at the Northville Funeral Home. A graveside service at the King Northampton Cemetery will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2009 followed by a gathering at his residence at County Highway 102 (Phelps Street). Memorial contributions may be sent to Mt. Valley Hospice, Salvation Army or the Brennan Humane Society. Envelopes are available at the Northville Funeral Home.
