National program honoring veterans comes to Fulton County

POSTED: August 8, 2009

Greg Furlong and Bruce Loveys from the Leatherstocking Honor Flight, a hub of the Honor Flight Network, recently met with Fulton County Veterans Service Agency Director Frank Ruggiero and Fulton County Office for Aging Director Andrea Fettinger to discuss this all volunteer, not for profit group. It is dedicated to honoring WW II veterans with a trip to the WW II Memorial in Washington, D.C., a news release said.

The next flight for this group is scheduled for Sept. 19. The organizers are looking for and encouraging any Fulton County WW II Veteran interested in traveling to Washington that day to sign up soon. The trip will be free to interested veterans. Costs are paid for solely by donations to Leatherstocking Honor Flight.

Applications for the trip are available at the Veterans Office, 57 E. Fulton St., Gloversville, or the OFA, 19 N. William St., Johnstown.

The organization also will be looking for volunteer "guardians" who would accompany the veterans on the trip. Guardians would need to pay their own way.

Any questions can be called into the local Veterans Office at 773-3401 or the OFA at 736-5650. Donations can be sent to: Leatherstocking Honor Flight, PO Box 621, Cobleskill, NY 12043.
