McHugh confirmation hearing set Thursday

By ZACH SUBAR, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: July 25, 2009

The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee announced confirmation hearings for U.S. Rep. John McHugh, R-Pierrepont Manor, will take place Thursday.

McHugh was nominated as secretary of the Army by President Obama in June.

Gov. David Paterson has said he will declare a date for a special election soon after McHugh is officially confirmed. He is widely expected to be approved quickly by the Senate, which means Paterson could set the election date for as early as September.

Meanwhile, State Sen. Darrel Aubertine, D-Cape Vincent, has not submitted his name for consideration to be the Democrats' pick to replace McHugh, ending weeks of speculation that he would receive the nomination.

"My priority must continue to be the work I have started in the state Senate, representing Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties," Aubertine said in a prepared statement Thursday. "Before I could even consider the possibility of serving another eight counties, I had a duty to finish out this year's session."

The National Republican Congressional Committee began running advertisements seeking to tie Aubertine to recent dysfunction in Albany and to failed fiscal policies before anyone had known whether he would officially submit his name for the nod.

The deadline for resumes from those interested in the Democratic nomination was Thursday. Munnsville resident Mike Oot and Watertown native Dan Francis, who have run against McHugh in the past, have both expressed an interest in running. Plattsburgh lawyer William Owens has also announced he will seek the nomination.

Jefferson County Democratic Committee Chairman Sean Hennessey did not return calls Friday inquiring about the status of other potential candidates.

Republicans in the district nominated Assemblywoman Deirdre Scozzafava, R-Gouverneur, Wednesday as their candidate for the impending special election.

The new "position" is his reward for voting yes on the crap, and trade bill. Whore for the new government that is being installed in this country. Our country has been hijacked by a bunch of globalist scum. As one poster put it "Where is the Birth Certificate?" Where is the Constitution! Read it folks and get to know it as well as you know the American Idol winner!

Hey "stratford" how's that Obama change working out for you? EXACT SAME POLICIES on Iraq, interogation, and social issues as our last real President, George W. Bush. Expanding the military, refusing the far left wing's agenda. Bam knows where the American people are.

Thursday the deed is done ... Judas will be given his pouch of silver and the taxpayers that put him in the right place at the right time will pick up the tab ....The Leader Herald will continue to fawn over his name and the Dems strengthen their stranglehold. Change you can believe in.

While I agree completely on crap and trade, Team Obama has great plans for this district and the Community Organizer in Chief will make sure that we get someone who knows absolutely nothing about upstate New York and everything about please Big Brother Bam. Think Scott Murphy.

I hope that McHugh is quickly confirmed. Then he can quickly resign his office as my Representative. I would rather have no representation in Washington, than have someone who would sell his vote to get a cushy job.Do you not think that there was some quid pro quo to get him to vote for the cap and trade bill?
