CANAJOHARIE - When the solar lights in her garden start to light up, Deborah Limoncelli knows that it's time to wrap up her gardening for the day and head inside.
"It's a lot of work, but it's worth it," Limoncelli said as she was showing off her garden at her 14 Lafayette St. home in Palatine Bridge.
Her garden, which contains bayberry and hibiscus, along with an organic vegetable garden and a joey plant, which Limoncelli said is in its first year being allowed in the United States, was one of 10 gardens that were on display in the third annual Mohawk Valley Garden Tour Saturday.
Most of the gardens were located in the towns of Canajoharie and Palatine, but there was one, at the Liberty Day Treatment Center, in Fort Plain.
The tour was sponsored by the New York State Federation of Women's Clubs, the Mohawk Valley Women's Club and the Palatine Literary Society. The proceeds from the tour will benefit the Canajoharie and Fort Plain Central School District libraries.
Marge Datz, who organized the tour, along with Joanne Michel, said the schools were very receptive to the idea.
"This year, we're looking at helping the schools because of the money and the tight budgets," Margaret Datz said.
The past two years the beneficiary of the garden tour was the Canajoharie Youth Center because of the damage it suffered during the 2006 flood.
"They've been coming along fairly well, but because of the state budget they're low on funding," Datz said. "I think, however, that a lot of the flood damage has been replaced."
