Three seek council seat

GLOVERSVILLE - Two more candidates have entered the race for councilman-at-large, bringing the number of candidates to at least three but possibly more.

Third Ward Councilman James Robinson, a Republican, said this morning he plans to run for the post, which is held by James Handy.

Robinson, 53, said the city needs better leadership and believes he would bring "some civility back to the city."

"Hopefully, we can rectify some of the spending, and see if we can create some kind of economic growth here in the city," Robinson said.

Robinson works as a maintenance electrician at the Tryon youth facility in Perth. He said he's lived in Gloversville his entire life.

Robinson, who is in his second term as a councilman, lives with longtime companion Amanda Ossenfort on Smith Street. He has three children.

He joins 2nd Ward Councilman John Castiglione, also a Republican, who has announced his candidacy for the position. Sixth Ward Councilman Ray Hindes, a Democrat, planned to announce his candidacy at the Senior Citizens Service Center of Gloversville & Fulton County this morning.

Handy said this morning he's still undecided about running for re-election, but expects to make a decision soon.

Former Councilwoman Shirley Savage announced her candidacy for councilman-at-large weeks ago but said this week she'll run for 4th Ward supervisor instead. Anthony "Chart" Buanno, who has held the post for many years, said this week he's not running for re-election.
