Businessman eyes former Decca plant
By ZACH SUBAR, The Leader-HeraldJOHNSTOWN - The owner of School House Companies may purchase the former Decca Records building on Route 30A east of Gloversville and use it for warehousing.
The 250,000-square-foot building now is owned by Universal Music Group Manufacturing and Logistics, which is a division of Universal Music Group.
The building was temporarily owned by Grace Real Estate, whose subsidiary, Uni Water, considered establishing a bottling plant in the building in 2007. That project never got off the ground.
Now, School House owner Fred Olbrych has expressed interest in buying the building so it can be used for warehousing and light manufacturing. Olbrych's attorney, Canajoharie lawyer Charles Tallent, presented information about the project to the town's Planning Board at a meeting last week.
School House does transportation work, and Tallent said the operation likely would run around the clock. He said there would be about 10 trucks entering and exiting the facility each day, so truck traffic patterns won't be seriously affected.
The project "is not a huge operation," Tallent said.
Olbrych will look to replace some outdoor lights at the building, and he does not plan to have outdoor storage at the site.
Tallent said the project will be good for the town. The facility is not being used now, and Tallent said the purchase would allow taxes to be paid on the property once again.
"It's a no-brainer," Tallent said.
Olbrych said he is trying to complete the sale, and he expects to know more about the project in a couple of weeks. Town Planning Board members will discuss the project further July 14.

Beam shops, yeah they last forever in Fulton county... while the jobs dry up and go away and then the taxpayers have to foot the bill for the clean up...hmm Pan Am tanning on Fulton Street ext. while it's sister plant runs in Johnstown. Karg Brothers, Risendorph and the list goes on. Plastic pallets are replacing wooden pallets. You can't keep college grad's in the area working a beam shop or piece rate pallet repair.

Beam shops are manufacturing - the exact type of jobs we have lost to overseas. Pallets are used for manufactured goods. So do you want manufacuting or service jobs?

We got the super duper wally center coming to create tons of jobs we don't need another pallet repair station. Wally DC is about to lose their tax break for not living up to the agreement. This area needs to bring in real tech jobs, not beam shops and pallet repair and wally world door greeters.

I think the US as a whole should provide big tax breaks for businesses that operate and produce here in the US - No Businesses = no Jobs! In what has become a true global economy, can you imagine if the US was the manufacturing and service hub of the world? would it be so horrible that those business payed a reletively small amount of tax if it guaranteed plentiful and high paying jobs - and with such high demand for workers - wages would increase. The best minds and the best workers would find their way here once again. Someone please tell me how this would be bad?

Are you in Cuba now? If I am looking for a job, do I not want one because I will have to pay taxes? Do I not want employers in the area to help create jobs so my neighbors can share the expense of the schools roads water etc. ___________________________________________ Your mentality is why kids leave school here and never come back - You should be kissing this guys feet!

Here we go again "The facility is not being used now, and Tallent said the purchase would allow taxes to be paid on the property once again." Businesses do not pay taxes, people do. Get that into your thick skull Fulton Co. and NYS. I would guess if this potential new business does not guarantee a certain number of jobs created in a specified time it will have to deal with more tax burden. Great idea!!
