Area athletes post solid showings at states

CICERO - Mayfield's Becca Graudons improved on last year's pole vault finish at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships, taking fifth place.
She was sixth last year. Her personal best is 10-6 and she topped 10 feet Friday. Although she would have liked to set a new personal record, she said she was satisfied with her performance.
"I felt really good right up until I got over 10 feet," Graudons said. "Then I tried to change things a little bit for my 10-6 jump and it pretty much went downhill from there. I tried to change my steps. It didn't help at all. My last jump was really close, but I didn't have it."
She said everyone would like to beat their personal record, but she was happy with how she finished.
Linda Hadfield of New York Mills won the event with a vault of 11-6.
Two other local athletes will continue their quest for state glory today as Fonda-Fultonville's Chris Jones and Canajoharie's Bethany Young return to Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Jones is three events into his Division-II boys' pentathlon and is in seventh place with 1,819 points. He will compete in the long jump and 1,500-meter run today to finish out the pentathlon. He said his goal is to break 3,000 points and possibly threaten the school record of 3,316.
"I really need to get at least a 19-foot long jump to get me closer to 3,000," Jones said. "I'm really hoping to get my 15 down to 4:45. If I at least get a 4:50 and an 18-5 in the long jump, that will give me over 1,000 points and put me over 3,000."
He finished the 110 hurdles in 16.26, topped 5-10 in the high jump and threw the shot put 33-4. He improved on his performances in the hurdles and high jump from the state qualifier.
Young made it through Friday's prelims to today's finals in the 100-meter hurdles. She was third in her heat with a time of 15.80, which earned her the seventh seed in today's 10 a.m. final.
Knowing she has run faster, with a 15.5 PR, makes her confident she can improve her standing today, she said.
"I know I've gone faster and I know I can do it," Young said. "I was mad at myself when I finished because on the last hurdle, I four-stepped and I thought that was going to kill me. I thought I wasn't going to make finals, but I did, so [today] I'm going to try to run my fastest time and three-step the whole way."
The top seed in the finals is Waterloo's Brooklynn Ventura with a time of 14.51.
Broadalbin-Perth's Lianna Ferguson said she had an off day in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:07.39 and ninth overall.
"I think I started off OK," she said. "It's a little different because the track's so big and I was in Lane 7. Then I got to that corner [turn three] and I kept coming to the side. It was an OK race. My legs couldn't really go and my form wasn't the greatest. Not a great hurdle day, I guess."
She said she was happy to get back to states, though, and was looking forward to continuing her work in the event at college.
The event was won by Chenango Valley's Mari Guirastante in 1:03.54.
Northville's Alicia Ellsworth likewise had an off day in the triple jump. She didn't get off the board in her first jump and fouled on her last two.
"On my second jump, it seemed like it was about where I usually get," Ellsworth said. "It was around 34-something. But I faulted."
She had gone as far as 34-10 during the season. The winning distance was 40-5 , posted by Elmira-Notre Dame's Olivia Weeks. Ellsworth said although she was disappointed, she was glad to have made it to the state meet.
