JOHNSTOWN - Four more local athletes qualified Friday for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet.

Knox Field hosted the Section II State Qualifier, where Canajoharie's Bethany Young, Fonda-Fultonville's Chris Jones, Mayfield's Becca Graudons and Northville's Alicia Ellsworth each punched a ticket to the state meet. They join three local athletes who qualified Thursday - Chris Gattman (discus), Shane Smith (shot put, discus) and Lianna Ferguson (400-meter hurdles).

Young won the Division II girls' 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.6 seconds, beating out Voorheesville's Seneca Gray, who also qualified.

"This is my fastest time ever," Young said. "I was so excited. I gave my coach a big hug as soon as I crossed the line."

After just missing a state berth last year in the event, Young entered the finals as the top seed. She also had run a qualifying time in a previous meet, which meant she had only to finish second in the finals to qualify. She said that made her a little less nervous, but not much.

At the state meet, she said, her goal is to reach the finals.

Jones was second in the Division II boys' pentathlon with 2,939 points. He finished behind Ichabod Crane's David Gray (3,059) and ahead of Galway's Stephen Wilday (2,897).

"I PR-ed in the 1,500 today at 4:51. I'm usually around 5 or, occasionally, 4:54," Jones said. "In the high jump, I'm normally around 5-10. My hurdles weren't as good as they should have been. I ran a 16.1 and I usually run a 15.8. In the long jump, I PR-ed today with an 18-5. I still have to work on my shot put, but I've been doing all right with that."

Jones won the pentathlon high jump (5-9 3/4) and finished ahead of Gray in the 1,500 (4:50.8). He reached 34-11 in the shot put.

He said at states, his goal will be more centered on his personal numbers than any finish in the standings.

"I want to see how I can do at state. It'll be great competition," Jones said. "I really want to PR in the hurdles and the high jump. I definitely want to get my 1,500 down. I really want to PR in everything so I can break 3,000. That's my goal."

In the Division II girls' pole vault, Becca Graudons is going back to states. She topped 9-6 to finish second to Chatham's Leah Wightman (10-0). Despite already having been to states, Graudons said, "It's still the same excitement.

"I came in knowing it was going to be very competitive," she said. "There was another girl [Wightman] I knew could jump higher than me and I had to have a good day to make it. I was fighting for it."

Graudons was well ahead of third-place finisher Imelda Muller (8-6) from Taconic Hills, though.

Now she said she will work through her drills this week and work on some pointers given to her by Mayfield alum Mitch Rovito and she hopes to tie or beat her personal best of 10-6.

In the Division II girls' triple jump, Ellsworth reached 34-6 1/2 to take second place behind Whitehall's Brittany St. Clair (37-2). She beat out Schuylerville's Sarah Palmer (34-2 1/2) for the at-large bid.

Ellsworth reached 34-10 earlier in the season, but still had to finish at least second Friday for that to matter.

She faulted on her first two jumps in the finals and needed a clean, long, triple jump to get back to states after making the trip last spring. That made her a little nervous. Coach Shelley Murphy told her what marks the other girls had reached and that made her more nervous.

"Murph was saying how there were so many people ahead of me," she said. "I was really surprised [to qualify], actually."

Several other locals finished in the top six at the state qualifier Friday.

Fonda's Kendra Bush was third in the Division II girls' long jump (17-1/2) and fifth in the 100 (12.7). Katie Newkirk was fourth with a personal record in the shot put (36-8), Kayla Twardzik was fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.4). The boys' relay team was third in the 3,200 relay (8:40.9), Sean Franklin was fifth in the pentathlon (2,791),

Mayfield's Rebecca Brower was fourth in the Division II girls' discus (102-6).

Johnstown's team of Kayla Satterlee, Kendra Cooper, Madina Alam and Emily Bearden was second in the Division II girls' 400 relay (51.3). Bearden was fourth in the 200 (26.8).

Gloversville's Dustin Watson was third in the Division I boys' 110 hurdles (14.9) by a judge's decision. His time was the same as second-place Ryan Amodeo's for Scotia-Glenville.

Broadalbin-Perth's Nicole Wojciechowski was third in the Division II girls' 2,000 steeplechase (7:42.1). The Lady Patriots 3,200 relay team finished fourth (10:11.9). Shanise Stemmler was sixth in the pentathlon (2,165). The B-P boys' relay team was third in the 1,600 relay (3:32.6), Adam Rasefske was fifth in the 1,600 (4:35.6).

Canajoharie's Cora Soodsma was sixth in the Division II girls' 1,500 (5:51.0). The Canajoharie boys' relay team was fifth in the 3,200 relay (9:09.8), Max Prime was sixth in the 100 (11.6), John Dillenbeck was sixth in the 800 (2:07.4).

Fort Plain's Ben Clute was third in the Division II boys' 110 hurdles (15.8).

Northville's Jessica Hassan was fourth in the Division II girls' long jump (16-11).

Amsterdam's Danielle Schroeder was fourth in the Division I girls' pentathlon (2,361).

The state meet will take place Friday and Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
