City may repair fire station roof

By MICHAEL ANICH, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: May 27, 2009

GLOVERSVILLE - The city may have $25,000 to $30,000 left over from a City Hall repair project low bid approved Tuesday night by the Common Council. The city may be able to roll the money into a project to fix the leaky roof at the city fire station.

That assessment came from city Finance Commissioner Bruce VanGenderen, who briefed the council on bids during its meeting at City Hall.

The council approved an $11,878 low bid from Enviro-Smart Roofing Services of Gloversville to do a City Hall capital project roof repair and work involving new fascia and soffit from the city Police Department to the north parking lot. It was noted three bids were received.

Third Ward Councilman James Robinson asked whether in the future such bids could be opened during council meetings. He said if the city knows a "big number" project is to be bid on, it might be advantageous to open them during a meeting.

City Attorney John N. Clo said he could look into rules regarding public bid openings.

The council also approved a $21,447 bid from David Jablonski to do the City Hall roof repair of the south-end section toward the Police Department.

VanGenderen said the bid for that project came in "substantially lower" than what was originally estimated, and the city should have about $25,000 to $30,000 in remaining funding.

He said he plans oto send a memo to the council to decide whether the city wants to apply that extra funding to fix the city Fire Department roof on Frontage Road.

Robinson said the city may want to wait another year on the central fire station roof.

"We are really concentrating on City Hall only [at this time]," the councilman said.

City Fire Chief Douglas Edwards said his station roof continues to leak and he expressed some concern Tuesday night about rain anticipated today. He said any repairs of the station roof are done in sections.

In another matter, 2nd Ward Councilman John Castiglione said the Gloversville Enlarged School District wants an answer from the city on whether it wants to be involved as it was last year in a swim program at Gloversville Middle School this summer.

VanGenderen said district Board of Education President Perry Paul wants a response in writing from the city.

Castiglione said $12,000 might be available from the city for the program, but he noted the Senior Citizens Service Center of Gloversville & Fulton County also wants funding, although he didn't specify why.

Castiglione said the swim program benefits young and old and "it's healthy and something they enjoy doing."

"I think we should wait and see what price they give us," said 5th Ward Councilman Matthew Myers.

Mayor Tim Hughes said he can contact the school district and request more information.

Bids should be opened during the public sessions, not in Timmy's office over coffee. More secrecy...
