Edward Jing Chu, 83, of Edinburg, New York, died Thursday at Mountain Valley Hospice of Gloversville. He was born on October 23, 1925, the son of the late George and Georgia (Chiang) Chu. He graduated from Gloversville High School prior to enlisting in the Air Force.
Ed was a veteran of World War II, having served as a tail gunner on a B24 in the 8th Air Force based in Seething, England, where he made many friends. He completed his service as a staff sergeant and subsequently entered RPI in Troy, NY, to study chemical engineering. After completing his baccalaureate, Ed was employed as a chemical engineer at the Resistoflex Corporation in New Jersey and Ashville, North Carolina. He was married to Adelia ("Dee") Slatt of Hornell, NY, who predeceased him several years ago.
He is survived by three brothers, Kenneth (Nancy) of Durham, New Hampshire, James (Ann) of Jamesville, NY, and Raymond of Liverpool, NY. A fourth brother, William (Judy) of Westford, Massachusetts, predeceased him, as did his sister, Helen Chu Mohler of New York City. Several nieces and nephews remember their Uncle Ed and his bright smile.
A hobby of Ed's was photography and creating illustrated books about his time in the service, the planes and their crews. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a longtime member of a hunting club located near Wells, NY.
The family will receive friends Friday 4 - 7 p.m. at the Finocan Funeral Home Inc., 13 Prospect Ave., Gloversville. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday (April 25) 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Kirianne Weaver officiating. Interment will take place in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
