Love story among photo showcase

March 21, 2009
By KERRY McAVOY / The Leader-Herald

JOHNSTOWN - Among the photos of people, catfish and crumbling homes on display at the Tiffany Smith Gallery on Friday, stood a story of artistic love.

Jennifer Young said she found the work of fellow photographer Mike Canton on Myspace and liked it. After chatting for a while, she suggested they meet, and it turned out they were both planning on going to the same event at the gallery.

When they first laid eyes on each other at the gallery about a year ago, it was love at first sight.

"I knew we would marry each other," Young said.

Now the two own Image Eklectik Photography in Tribes Hill. They specialize in alternative lifestyle weddings and are planning nuptials of their own.

"We're doing it our own way," Young said.

Their work was shown side by side at the Contemporary Photography Showcase during an open house at the gallery Friday.

Joining them in the showcase are sisters Katie May and Meadow Erskine, who seem to bend time with their photographs of dying homes and people dressed for another era.

Aleeta Carr Sutter is showing her series of black-and-white nature photographs. From a catfish emerging from dark water to a lily pad-filled pond, Sutter's artwork is available to both browse and buy.

The Contemporary Photography Showcase will be on display at the 110 Prospect St. gallery for a month.

The show can only be viewed by appointment. To make an appointment, call 848-3279.
