Campus Clippings: Kucel claims honors

Kevin Kucel (Gloversville) was named to the second-team all-Region III squad and a first-team Mountain Valley Conference player for the Herkimer County Community College men's basketball team.

Kucel averaged 14.1 points and 7.1 assists per game for the Generals. He also is ranked second in the country for his assist total and second for his 84.9 percent free-throw percentage.

Evelyn Marrero (Amsterdam) of the Bentley University indoor track team was named a Northeast-10 women's Athlete of the Week for her performance in the conference championship race.

She won the 5,000-meter run in 19:21.87, making her the only freshman to win an event.

Kristen Stein (Gloversville) finished seventh in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.91 for the State University of New York at Oneonta women's indoor track and field team at the SUNY Athletic Conference championships.

Stein also ran the third leg of Oneonta's winning 1,600-meter relay team, which finished in 4:05.27 and set an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference standard.

Lacie Newland (Gloversville) was 13th in the 800-meter run in 2:29.95. She also was on the Red Dragons' fourth-place distance medley relay team that finished in 13:28.41.

Steve Hall (Johnstown) finished sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association championship meet for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute men's swimming and diving team.

Hall finished with a time of 2:09.37 and swam the third leg of RPI's third-place 400-yard medley relay team, which finished with a time of 3:29.09.

He finished ninth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:20.95

Overall, the Engineers finished third with 1,039 points.

Gina Parillo (Amsterdam) and Heidi Anderson (Canajoharie) have both completed their first regular season with the SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team, which also played its first season at the NCAA Division III level.

Now, the Fighting Tigers will host the North Eastern Athletic Conference championships, which began Tuesday and will finish Sunday.

Cobleskill earned the top seed.

Bela Vonnak (Canajoharie) scored 11 points, but the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team fell, 72-65, to RPI in the Liberty League tournament.

The Saints will move on to the NCAA tournament, where they will play Brooklyn, Friday.

Nicole Hallenbeck (Fonda-Fultonville) was second in the novice equitation on the flat for the Morrisville State hunt seat women's equestrian team.

Overall, the team placed sixth at the Cornell University IHSA show with 25 points.

Helen Biette (Fonda-Fultonville) won the Intermediate II, section A class for the Morrisville State women's western equestrian team and Garrick Spencer (Fonda-Fultonville) was first in the novice western horsemanship class, section C.
