LeRoy ‘Roy’ Walter Allen

LeRoy "Roy" Walter Allen, 98, formerly of Maple Knoll Apartments in Johnstown, NY and most recently a resident of the E.L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam, passed away Wednesday evening, January 28th, 2009.

Born in Amsterdam, NY on March 21, 1910, a son of George and Minnie Churchett Allen. Mr. Allen lived in Amsterdam and Tribes Hill, NY for most of his life. He attended local schools.

Mr. Allen lived for a time in Port St. Lucie, Florida from 1981 to 2005.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II serving as a Quarter Master Third Class. Roy served throughout the Pacific Theatre aboard a submarine chaser near Sipan and Guam. He was employed by Mohawk Carpet Mills in Amsterdam for over 45 years as a Head Colorist in the Wilton Coloring Department, retiring in 1971.

He was a member of the Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church and was a former Trustee of the church. Mr. Allen was a former member of the YMCA in Amsterdam and the Arthur Carter Municipal Golf Course in Amsterdam.

He married Kathleen P. Hopkins on March 17th, 1937. She passed away on January 25th, 1998. Survivors include one son, David Allen (Carol) of Mayfield, NY; one daughter, Andrea "Penny" Edwards (Robert) of Hills Borough, CA; grandchildren, Debra K. Allen Van Amburgh (Timothy) of Tribes Hill, NY, David Allen Jr. of Mayfield, NY, Robert Edwards III (Ruth) of Henderson, Nevada and Michael Edwards (Christine) of Redwood City, CA; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Monday February 2nd, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam with Rev. Lois Dodge presiding. Cremation will be in Vale Cemetery Crematorium, Schenectady, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday prior to the funeral service beginning at 1:00 P.M. at the at the funeral home.
