Frank S. Kovarik

Frank S. Kovarik died peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 16th, at Ellis Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Johnstown on April 6, 1930, the son of the late Stephen and Anna Palcovic Kovarik. Frank attended Johnstown High School excelling in sports, especially basketball and baseball, graduating in 1948. After graduation, Frank was employed by Ferris Hardware until entering the Army as an artiliary mechanic with the 551st Missile Battalion. Upon discharge from the service in 1955, Frank worked for many years for Tom's Electric. He then became Johnstown's City Treasurer from 1965 to 1997. During that time, he was a member of the New York Society of Municipal Finance Officers becoming their president in 1984. Frank loved fishing, spending winters in Florida and handicapping horse races at Tampa Downs and Saratoga. He was an avid area bowler for many years. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish and their Men's Club. He married the former Carolyn Fichtinger on May 10, 1952 who survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Susan Kent of Schenectady, Christine Therrien and her husband Mark of Johnstown, Maryann Reppenhagen and her husband A.R. of Gloversville; and one son, Stephen and his wife Kimberly of Liverpool, N.Y. Frank was a loving and devoted grandfather to his 11 grandchildren, Michael Kent, Jordan, Megan and Lindsay Therrien, Ashley, Andrew, Abigail, Brianna and Carli Kovarik and Anthony and Alexander Reppenhagen. He is also survived by a sister, Florence Jeffers; a nephew, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by brothers, Steve and George; and a sister, Mary.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church with the Rev. Kenneth Swain, pastor, as celebrant. The family will receive friends on today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Frank's name to the American Cancer Society or the Johnstown Public Library.
