Town offices under repair
By KERRY McAVOY, The Leader-HeraldCANAJOHARIE - Renovations that began in April at the Town Hall are progressing.
During Tuesday's Town Board meeting, Supervisor Bob McMahon updated the board on the ongoing work and outlined future projects.
The courtroom has been enlarged by removing a patrician and moving the judge's chambers to the first floor.
The town previously had issues with the small room. On court nights, people would have to sit in the hall.
Old carpeting has been pulled up and oak hardwood floors underneath have been refinished.
New paint, lighting and woodwork are planned for the room.
A wall in an office and foyer on the first floor was renovated to make way for the judge's chambers and the assessor's office.
The town will seek estimates to replace the flooring outside the first-floor rest room. McMahon said the town probably will install linoleum.
The town plans to hire an architect to design an update for the rear deck of the building.
McMahon said the front porch needs repair.
McMahon said the town will look into getting a new heating and cooling system. Currently, the system is loud and must be turned off during court dates and meetings.
Much of the money for the next phase will come from a $24,000 state grant secured by state Sen. Hugh T. Farley, R-Niskayuna.
Councilman John Toomey Jr. said he wants to see a handicapped-accessible entrance for the first floor.
There now is a way for wheelchairs and strollers to get into the second floor, but the only way to access the first floor is by stairs.
