William Zierak
Mr. William Zierak, 77, of Midline Road, Perth, New York, passed away Sunday, August 31, 2008, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, New York.
He was born October 3, 1930 in Amsterdam, New York, a son of the late Albert J. and Violet Dybas Zierak II. He attended local schools and was a lifelong area resident.
A 1948 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School, he entered the Army that year and served with the 82nd Airborne Division. Upon his discharge, he owned and operated Kiddo's Hot Dog Shop on Reid Street in Amsterdam, New York until being recalled to the Army at the outbreak of the Korean War. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 701 and the Polish-American Veterans, both of Amsterdam, New York.
Upon moving to Perth, he became active in politics. He was a member and past president of the Perth Democratic Club, a past member of the Perth Volunteer Fire Company and the Perth Youth Commission. He was also a member of the Perth Historical Society and worked to establish Fulton-Montgomery Community College. He also attended the college.
Mr. Zierak was elected Supervisor of the Town of Perth in 1965 and served Perth and Fulton County for 26 years. He was a member and past president of the New York State Supervisors and County Legislators Association, the New York State Association of Towns, the New York State Association of Counties and served on several committees.
He worked at Karg Brothers Tannery in Johnstown, New York, for 15 years. He then worked at the Tryon School for 21 years before retiring.
He was a communicant of the Church of St. John the Baptist Church in Amsterdam, New York.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Jennings Zierak, whom he married November 29, 1952; two sons, Brent Zierak (Vicki) of Hagadorn Mills, NY and Lee Zierak (Lynn) Perth, NY; six grandchildren, Nathan Zierak, Perth, NY, Andrew Zierak (Amber), Johnstown, NY, Cristina Zierak, Hagadorn Mills, NY, Christopher Zierak (Ashley), Broadalbin, NY, Deidre Zierak, Johnstown, NY and Cameron Zierak, Perth, NY; one great-granddaughter, Kylee Zierak, Broadalbin, NY; two sisters, Maryann Margiotta (Joseph) and Alberta Fondacaro (Victor), all of Rotterdam Junction, NY; one brother, Albert J. Zierak III (Beverly) of Perth, NY; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2008 at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church Street, Amsterdam, New York with Rev. Stan Swierzowski officiating. Interment will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at the funeral home.
