GLOVERSVILLE - In a "zero-tolerance sweep" last week of the city's central business district and surrounding neighborhoods, police made 17 arrests, a number Capt. Jim Lorenzoni called "significant."
Lorenzoni said 21 officers participated, with 15 from the Gloversville Police Department, three from the Johnstown Police Department and three from the New York State Division of Parole. Officers were deployed in vehicles and on foot and were both in uniform and wearing plain clothes. Other officers were assigned to surveillance-camera duty.
"We want to demonstrate a refocused effort to the community to discourage needless loitering and prevent criminal behavior," Lorenzoni said.
Lorenzoni said the department acknowledges there is a perception of the central business district being unsafe.
"Whether that's true or not, perception is reality," he said. "We are stepping up our visible enforcement."
Lorenzoni said the department will do a cost-analysis of the sweep to see if the effort was justified by the number of arrests made. If it seems to have been merited, the department may conduct more such sweeps in the future.
As part of the effort, officers heavily patrolled the FJ & G Rail Trail on Thursday night, Lorenzoni said.
