Racing Around

Big money up for grabs at Fonda

July 31, 2008
By JAMES A. ELLIS, The Leader-Herald

Last Saturday's rain out has set up a high-octane August at Fonda Speedway.

The rained-out 50-lap, $5,000-to-win Go Green NMX Fonda Thunder Series event will be run Saturday night. Then the modifieds will return to the track Tuesday night for the 60-lap, $6,000-to-win series race.

There is little time for the drivers to rest as they will be right back at it next Saturday for a regular show, followed by the final night of track points competition Aug. 16 with the Night of Features.

Adding to the excitement Saturday night, besides the 50-lap modified feature, the Budget Sportsmen will be added to the program along with the Sixth Annual Wilma Smith Memorial Dash for Cash for the IMCA division and fireworks. Racing is slated to start at 6 p.m.

The Smith Memorial for tobacco-free IMCA competitors will have a slight twist this year as the cars, not the drivers, will be topless.

Besides the extra-distance modified feature Tuesday night, the Empire Super Sprints will make their third attempt to get their show in along with the 360 Sprint Open. Topping off the race card will be an open event for the sportsman division. Just in case, a rain date has been scheduled for Wednesday. Tuesday's show is set to start at 7 p.m.

Points

OK, time to look at the points chase at Fonda Speedway.

While the track's Web site is still under construction, the points have been updated.

Heading into Saturday's race program Bobby Varin leads the modified division 40 points ahead of Ronnie Johnson, 572-532. Pat Ward is third with 527 and defending track champion Matt DeLorenzo is fourth with 502. Jack Johnson rounds out the top five with 490. There are four races for track points remaining. Saturday's 50-lapper, the Aug. 9 30-lapper and the twin-20s on the Night of Features. Tuesday's 60-lapper does not count toward track points but does count toward the NMX Thunder Series championship. Ward leads that series with 130 points, while Varin is second with 122 and DeLorenzo third with 120.

David Towns is well on his way to his second-straight Sportsman division title with a 62-point advantage over Mark Kislowski, 552-490.

Defending Pro Stock track champion Kenny Gates tops the list with 530 points with Nick Stone second with 504. In the IMCA division, defending track champion Jeremy Cramer leads his brother Jim by 20 points, 379-359. Aaron Jacobs has the pressure on Jim one point back in third with 358.
