Montgomery County hit hard by rain

Heavy rain caused flooding and even some evacuations in Montgomery County Wednesday, and the county remains in a state of emergency until at least 8 p.m. today, officials said.
"It appears the town of Florida was impacted the most," said Rick Sager, deputy director of Emergency Management in Montgomery County. "There were road closures, washouts, culvert washouts and multiple cellar pump-outs."
Sager said Amsterdam and Charleston also were hard hit by the rain. He said the county will remain in a state of emergency until officials can "get a handle" on what transpired.
In Amsterdam, several families were evacuated from their homes on the banks of the South Chuctanunda Creek on Florida Avenue Wednesday night.
"A couple of houses sustained damage during a flash flood," said Amsterdam Fire Department
Battalion Chief Richard Depasquale. "Water poured into the houses, and they basically self-evacuated."
National Grid turned off power to the homes, and there were no injuries reported, Depasquale said.
"This hasn't happened in a long time," he said. "I've been here 20 years, and this is the first time it happened."
Several roads in Amsterdam were closed Wednesday, including Florida Avenue and Forest Avenue. A portion of Route 5S near Langley Road in the town of Florida was closed temporarily. A portion of McKinley Road in Palatine Bridge remained closed this morning. State police closed all lanes on the Thruway between Exit 26 and Exit 27 at Amsterdam from around 5:30 p.m. until almost 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Westbound traffic was diverted off the Thruway at Exit 26, while eastbound travelers had to leave the highway at Exit 27.
Fulton County experienced little in the way of flooding, said Superintendent of Highways and Facilities Mark Yost.
"We had a few [trees blow down], and we're out making repairs right now," he said. "There were a few minor shoulder wash-outs, but there were no major culvert or flooding issues. We're in good shape."
Officials in Hamilton County reported similar findings.
"We were very fortunate," said Hamilton County Undersheriff Karl Abrams. "We had the heavy rain but no winds. The storm stayed just south of us."
Fulton and Montgomery counties had approximately 2.5 inches of rain fall throughout the day and night Wednesday, though some isolated areas got as many as 4 inches, officials at the National Weather Service in Albany said. Rain is expected to continue today, but will not be as heavy as Wednesday, and should taper off by Friday. Weather service officials said most of the flood watches are now in effect for areas of Vermont and the Berkshires.

Thanks a lot RCG, I appreciate your kind words and I'm glad someone here understands me. I just try to speak the truth, and sometimes (or most of the time) it comes across as rude and inappropriate. But I dont mean anything by it, unless the particular person I'm attacking really deserves it. If there were more people like you in the community this dump would be a better place.

One thing I have noticed about Onesies is that he may say something that you disagree with. But, the bottom line is , he is just making an opinion about something. But whether you agree with him or disagree with him it is his opinion and shouldn't be misconstured as rude. I have noticed as I read his postings, he does have a big heart as well. Take the Special Ed busing issue, he was the first one to come to the defense of the special ed students and their parents and what is not right about that whole deal. So Steph before you go bashing someone in here remember it is just someone's opinion. You are free to agree or disagree.

We were on the thruway when the hardest rain hit. Two spots were really bad. First was next to the stone quary. That was about 2 feet deep and running real fast. Scared the snot out of us. Second one was about 1/4 mile down ****her. This was smaller, but they had blocked it on both sides, so we were stuck. They ended up opening it an hour or so later, but still that one was running really good. Bent a storm drain 90 degrees. Amazing the destructive power of water!!!

Easy Steph, I wasnt talking about people like you who live near the crick. I was referring to the cayaduttacrickpig, Ive seen him post on here before and he mention how he lives in the crick with all the stray cats. I just wanted to make sure he survived the flood. I may be rude and ignorant but not because of that comment, sorry if you took it the wrong way

I really hope that crick pig comment was not intended for the people who live along the crick if so Onesies is the most ingnorant and rudest person I have ever come across where a person lives has no bearing on who they are

I write to you on this very sady day in my life. Once again the flood waters have invaded my home. But this time it has reached higher up the banks then I could ever imagined. I can no longer sit on the banks of the crick and watch all the stray cats reproduce at world record pace. Thank you for the support Onesies. Its people like you that make this dump go around.

Fulton County's roads holding up well to the heavy rains is a testament to the fine job that Mark Yost is doing with that department. He's a man who gets in there and gets the job done... without a personal agenda. He is surely missed by the Gloversville School District.
