Fourth suspect charged in theft

By RODNEY MINOR, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: July 18, 2008

GLOVERSVILLE - A fourth suspect allegedly involved in a burglary at the Glove Theatre earlier this week has been arrested.

David M. Hemstreet, 20, of Sixth Avenue was arrested Thursday in Middletown, Mass., on a parole violation by the Essex County, Mass., Sheriff's Department, city police Capt. Jim Lorenzoni said this morning. Arrangements are being made to return Hemstreet to Gloversville.

Lorenzoni said it is not known how long the extradition process will take.

Hemstreet is the brother of co-defendant Shawn Hemstreet, 16, who shares the same address.

Police said the brothers, along with James C. DeSantis, 20, of Prospect Avenue, and Corey A. Wollard, 17, of Sixth Avenue, broke into the Glove Theatre and stole about $14,000 in tools and equipment.

Shawn Hemstreet, DeSantis and Woodward were all arraigned in City Court Wednesday on felony charges of third-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny. Bail was set at $10,000 each, and they were sent to the Fulton County Jail.

Police reported more than $7,000 in power tools were stolen. They belonged to Randall Etheredge, a carpenter from Ancram, Columbia County.

Other items also were reportedly taken from the theater, including two sound boards, six walkie-talkies, hand-held and wireless microphones and candy.

Lorenzoni said this morning virtually all of the stolen goods have been recovered. Most of the items were found at the Sixth Avenue residence of three of the defendants.

DeSantis is the son of City Court Judge Vincent DeSantis, who currently is serving on the bench in Family Court.

A former president of the Glove's Board of Directors, Vincent DeSantis helped reopen the old theater in 1997. It had been closed for more than 20 years.

Despite the theft, the musical "Romance/Romance" is still expected to start its run at the Glove Theatre tonight, a theater official said.

The musical also is scheduled to be performed Saturday and July 25 and 26.

Tickets to "Romance/Romance" cost $15 for adults and $7 for students and children.

Teebzz, you should stay. I haven't always agreed with what you said, but also have at times. This makes for good conversation that is more open-minded. I agree that we can also learn from each other. I have had several conversations where I didn't necessarily agree with the person posting, but it has led me to research topics I would otherwise have not known about. That in itself is worth having different personalities on here. Gloversville will never progress if we maintain a "no outsiders" attitude, especially since the insiders are doing such a lousy job of running things.

I am also not crazy about the constant addition of cat advertisements. I like cats fine, but reading about them in every post is getting to be like tobacco or religious letters. Too much!

Bill, it is very appearent that you did not read the post here, We have already agreed there was nothing the parents could have done. and Mr. D's child is over 18 and not living at home, should he have gone over every 10 mins to see what was going on... . No, I don't think its a good thing for anyone, Mr. D is no exception, he acualy has it worse then the others as his name is being draged into this needlessly.

Lets bring back the chain gangs and make them work off their sentences, they get off to easy laying around in prison/jail and when they get out they do the crimes all over again cause it was so easy..

thanx rocky1, yeah, thats how we learn, from different opinions. im not going anywhere soon, im not easily offended by some of these inhospitable people. and i know its not a reflection of the people in that area. i have at least a dozen friends there and they show true small town friendliness... and no thanx catlady i already have a cat for 10 years now.

Hope when his dad sends his son to jail he should remember to tell him he still loves him. What a embarrisment to the family.THIS IS WHY PARENTS NEED TO KEEP TABS ON THEIR CHILDREN.

I am truly astounded how you cat wackos manage to work your cat stories into every topic. The article is about the theft from the theater, where the h*ll do cats fit in.

teebzz, I hope you stay. I don't always agree with you but that is what makes education so much fun. Different opinions can give you food for thought and maybe want to learn more. The posters here could use more of it. How in the world did cats even become an issue and then you condemn teebzz? I am allergic to cats, therefore I stay away from them. Does that mean I can no longer post?

Bubbles...you're really on to something with combining subjects in one article. It really does save time. More posters should think like you.

Silent - im very proud of you. You are doing youre part to help the cat problem.

Teebzz, how dare you!! The only thing old on here are your witless comments. Youre the rudest cat I know and there are plenty of other people who have seen enough of your inconsiderate posts. Enough is enough

1st of all, the LH already reported on July 16 that the show was not cancelled, 2nd .. Bubbles dont u think that "cat crap" is getting a little dry already and lost its aroma?

I agree with JustMe. No matter what "direction" the theater takes, as long as it's bringing people in, then it's good for the City. If this is about politics, then I think this is sort of like when the coach or the owners sacks the QB for a new one. Some fans just don't want to get behind the new guy, but the new guy is still fighting for your team!

The Glove is the pitts and so are all of you who complain about how the LH writes their articles. Who cares if they combine a theft article with a little free advertising, why would you want to read 2 seperate articles??

Instead of complaining about pointless issues, flip over to the classifieds and look into adopting a kitty. I know Catfactory has placed many ads. These precious animals need a loving home...go out and get one!

Justme - You are correct on what you say, and I did not mean to lesson the value of them - I am also not a big fan, so I am not on there band wagon - I was trying to respond on to why some of us are not in the parade of the Glove. Yes it would have been a shame if they could not go on, but no more, or less of someone who lost there home to a fire, or someone that was rob of all there belongings - This is just my humble opinion - But lets not get off on a tangent here. Like I said earlier, this is not the time or the place.

Doesn't anyone see the importance of the cast/crew and their dedication? Imagine how they felt once learned that the show could possibly be canceled/delayed due to the theft. There was some sound equipment taken too, not just tools.

Everyone should be thankful for "all" volunteers that has helped this theatre along the way. I think it's wonderful that it's up and running again, what a beautiful facility.

Maybe the path is not everyones taste but still in all it's bringing some people/business to downtown, and that's a hard job to do here in G'ville.

Talk Talk, for one, its not a simple extradition - He (David) will spend a year in Middletown corrections on the parroll violation, Gloversville will have to wait. As for the Glove - I like many am very disapointed in the Glove - I personaly don't like the path its taken. And yes I did my share of volenter work there, though it was long ago - I am not going to get into details about my feelings on the glove, as this is not the time and place, Just not everyone is as estatic about the Glove as you are, and no I am not saying there is anything wrong with you.... - To each there own. Good luck to ANYONE that has been a victom in Gloversville

Wonder why "Silent" supposes it will take "over a year" for a simple extradition? And why in the world some of these posts aren't supportive of the Glove is mind-boggeling. Do they not realize that success of that historic theater is in their own best interests? Instead of complaining about free advertising, they should be clamoring for tickets. Go Stump City!

I don't know, I guess for me I am happy that "all" suspects are accounted for and show is still on. I wasn't too concerned about article placement.

I am extremely happy for the performers that all their time/hard work will be reconized as planned. Show should be great !

I do not think the show will go on, and the arrest should be in the same story. Even though they did not ask to be robed, they should not get any special treatment either, if my house was broken into , I am very sure the LH would not report that I will be replacing my .... or getting a new .... - Now if the LH deemed it nessasary to give some free advertisment, how about a related story, Like - Despite break in, the show will go on..... in another spot or even on the same page. (though I still don't think they should get special treatment)- I also would like to coment, that it will be over a year before David is retuned to NY, so don't be looking for anything on this soon. Alos the Great LH should put the right City in the paper, David was arrested in Haverhill, MA - He is being held in Middletown, MA - I know this is trivial, however if your going to report the news, Lets at least get it right. Just my 2 cents.
