Arrests made in Glove Theatre theft

Son of City Court judge among those charged

By RODNEY MINOR, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: July 17, 2008

GLOVERSVILLE - The son of City Court Judge Vincent DeSantis was one of three men arrested Wednesday by city police for allegedly breaking into the Glove Theatre and stealing about $14,000 worth of tools and equipment.

James C. DeSantis, 20, of 23 Prospect Ave., was charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny, both felonies. Police leveled the same charges against Corey A. Wollard, 17, and Shawn Hemstreet, 16, both of 33 Sixth Ave.

As of this morning, police still were looking for a fourth person who they believe was involved in the burglary.

Police reported more than $7,000 in power tools were stolen. The tools belonged to Randall Etheredge, a carpenter from Ancram, Columbia County, who volunteered last year to help renovate the stage at the theater. He eventually joined the Glove's Board of Directors.

A number of other items also were reportedly taken from the theater, including two sound boards, six walkie-talkies, a number of hand-held and wireless microphones and some candy that was to be sold at the concession stand.

Police Capt. Jim Lorenzoni said "good, old-fashioned police work" led to the arrests. Detectives conducted a large number of interviews before the arrests were made, he said.

Police said some items have been recovered, including the soundboards. They were found at the residence of Wollard and Hemstreet, police said.

Police said detectives are investigating the whereabouts of other stolen items.

Emily Grant, executive director of the theater, said after the burglary occurred that given the location of some of the items, it seemed as if someone with knowledge of the theater must have taken them.

Lorenzoni said it was possible, though it has not been confirmed by police, James DeSantis could have been familiar with the layout of the theater through his family's participation in its activities.

A former president of the Glove's Board of Directors, Vincent DeSantis was a key player in getting the theater reopened in 1997. It had been closed for more than 20 years.

Vincent DeSantis, who has been serving on the bench in Fulton County Family Court, said this morning it would be improper for him to comment on the arrests at this time.

The three suspects were arraigned Wednesday night in City Court and remanded to the Fulton County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. Jail officials said all three still were there this morning.

I believe that in NY a parent is financially reponsible for their child until they are 21. So yes the parents will unfortunately be affected by the actions of their children in this case even though the kids are old enough to be making their own decisions. It is extremely hard to teach your children who to hang with and even though you teach them not to do wrong, they still do sometimes. A parent can only do their best that they know how to raise their child, then the child comes upon real life choices. Which voice will the child listen to at that particular moment is hard to say. Being that Judge DeSantis is currently the family court judge, makes the actions of his son even harder for the judge to deal with I believe. I do empathize with him as I have seen what he has done in the community and he doesn't deserve this free advertising.

TeeBzz - Mostly we are defending MR. D - and how the LH and others papers choose to print his name in the paper becouse he was a judge and did not print any others -

Starry, starry night. Portraits hung in empty halls, Frameless heads on nameless walls, With eyes that watch the world and can't forget. Like the strangers that you've met, The ragged men in the ragged clothes, The silver thorn of bloody rose, Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me, How you suffered for your sanity, How you tried to set them free. They would not listen, they're not listening still. Perhaps they never will...

Hey JB, why don't you elaborate on "the way this screwed up system works"? You're alluding to favoritism, yet without a shred of evidence. I'll take that bet, but judging from your diatribe, you're probably too broke to pay attention.

why do people keep bringing up " dont blame the parents" i dont see it here, maybe 1 or 2 eluded to it way back where u cant even see it anymore in the posts. people like to twist and add things that are not even there. thats how stories get blown out of proportion.

was a minor. He actually was in trouble more than once. Today he is 19 has left his past, in the past, has a good job and is working on getting ahead in life. I did my best to guide him, and often wondered where I went wrong. I have come to the understanding, I did not. I just did not have the control on him I thought I did. Let these kids face there charges. Let’s hope they get a fair trial. Let’s stop looking to hang the parents; they have enough to worry about right now.

The 4th child was arrested in another state the same day/time the other three where picked up (roughly) - As for the Parents. I know the mother of one of the named, spent her day crying and trying to get information on what was going to happen to her youngest son. This is no way for any parent to spend a day. Bail is set at $10grand - I can't speak for everyone, but I know for a fact that one of the families does not have that type of cash. Also because of the place involved, the community is going to be out for blood. These kids (if convicted) made a terrible mistake, one that will be with them for a long long time. Two of them where 20 – This will be a permenet record. One was 16, and one 17. Both facing adult charges. Now I am not trying to say in any way that what they did should be excused. I also don’t feel that this case should be tried here by us. As a parent myself I have had to watch my kids make mistakes and yes I have had a child that has been in trouble when h

They gave up their rights when they violated the law. As far as I know, when you lock up your house or building for the night it is against the law for anyone to break into it & take things that don't belong to them. And yes, I can talk about it because I have been afforded the FREEDOM OF SPEECH ! All I am saying is that I feel bad for the parent's of these young men. If one father's name can be printed, then why can't the other 2 ? And let's not forget about the boys who are involved. They need our prayers, another priveledge that we as Americans hav been granted.

the burglary happened Sunday or Monday. The 4th suspect is in jail somewhere else? When did he get picked up it's only Thursday. That's doesn't make sense

Okay what I have to say is that none of you ppl have no right to talk about them and their parents, how would you like it. It's is not your concern, it's their's an their parents, so just take care of your own children an wrooy about what they are doing because it looks to me like the police are doing their jod and your help or approval really isn't needed! && I also know of who the 4th, suspect is, and he is locked up, wich you should not be worried about. && one more thing, I dont think it's right that those kids name got braught up. What if they didnt want ppl to know, so I thought that was a wrong thing to do, ASK permision first!

Im not at all shocked to see so many people concerned about this case. For all that no Judge Desantis honestly no and believe that his son will be dealt with and Judge Desantis wont ask for nothing less than he himself would give me. All of us have to remember that we can change and this case should be dealt with as a learning point. RELAX HE'S ONLY HUMAN AND BESIDES HE A KID

Anyway, to expand on my earlier comment, I should have said parents can get blamed to some extent. Individuals ultimately have to bear at least part of the responsibility, depending on age and mental faculties. Of course, none of the people arrested are guilty of anything until proven so in court, right?

Yo Independent! Who's the 4th suspect? What's your source?

Parents can get blamed rightfully when abuse, neglect, or a lack of love is evident. Certainly not the case with Judge D, and hopefully not with the parents of the other suspects.

ohh && p.s. dont worry because for those of you "concerned" about the 4th person... that persons already in jail somewhere else.

obviously the judge wont try his own son and no one is getting favoritism... as u can see hes still in jail! and yes he is old enough but the judge himself shouldnt be criticized like this... his son is of age so he has no control over what he does. and these so called "perps" you keep refering to have names just like your "children" ... someones decisions DO NOT define them as a person.

This case hs nothing to do with "Parenting skills". It has to do with what the Perps think they can get away with! The judges "Kid" is 20. Old enough to know better. Thieving with minors!!! I've got no issue with Judge D. I do have an issue with favoritism.

One more thing I told my kids the same thing my dad told me - You get in trouble don't call me I'll call you ! Yes it happened - I made the officer give him a ticket and he paid me every cent back for the fine and attorney and got points on his license . I hate the parents who think that thier kids are above all like them and think they should not pay like the rest of us ! Bad skummy parents is what I call them .

hardworkingmom.. I agree I was just wondering why when someone elses kids do something wrong everyone blames the parents and thier parenting skills. parents can only guide thier kids the rest is up to the kids, bad things happen to all families no matter what thier standing in the community. Im sure all parents want the best for thier kids poor or rich. I was just curious why nobody made any remarks about parenting skills in this case.
