Broadalbin-Perth probes staff member's conduct

By KAYLEIGH KARUTIS, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: July 4, 2008

BROADALBIN - The Broadalbin-Perth Central School District Board of Education is investigating allegations a staff member had inappropriate relations with another school-related individual, authorities said Thursday.

Superintendent Stephen Tomlinson said a staff member at the district has been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

"There was an allegation made back in June of inappropriate conduct by a staff member," Tomlinson said.

State police investigated the allegations, and the investigation was closed because there was no evidence of any criminal activity, Tomlinson said.

The Board of Education, however, is conducting its own internal investigation into the allegations.

"We're trying to determine whether the allegations have any sort of basis," said board President Sam Jackling. "The investigation is ongoing, and we'll go until it's finished."

Tomlinson said he could not divulge the details of the allegations or whether they were sexual in nature.

"There are a lot of rumors out there," he said. "It's a sensitive personnel issue[The staff member in question] is innocent until proven guilty."

Jackling said placing a staff member on paid administrative leave is a precaution taken based on the severity of the allegation.

"Some levels of allegations might not warrant any initial action," he said.

An investigator with the state police could not confirm whether the police had conducted the investigation.

He said there are several other investigators who could have investigated the allegations, but none were available for comment.

In an e-mailed memo to district staff, Tomlinson advised staff members not to talk in public about the situation and rumors regarding it.

People are jumping out before the know the facts. I don't see where it mentions a child involved, Nore does it say the suspect is male or female

I think we all need to take a look at our moral compass. Do you seriously think it's a teenager's fault for an adult's unprofessional behavior? Where do we draw the line? Shouldn't teachers be held to a higher level of trust and professionalism? Who cares how it all came about or what happened in this case... the fact is it's wrong!! A teacher needs to know where to draw the line with student relationships!
