Senior picnic canceled after senior prank

By KAYLEIGH KARUTIS, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: June 27, 2008

BROADALBIN - A senior prank at Broadalbin-Perth High School contributed to the cancellation of the senior picnic and resulted in suspensions and orders of community service.

Some 16 students were involved in the prank, Superintendent Stephen Tomlinson said. The students obtained a key to the building and went in during the weekend about two weeks ago, he said. They took furniture, including desks, from classrooms and placed it in the hallway, Tomlinson said.

There was no damage to any of the property, he said.

"It was more of an inconvenience than anything else," he said.

The students were brought before the school's Board of Education, Tomlinson said. They were suspended from school for three days and ordered to perform 30 hours of community service each, he said.

The school recovered the key, Tomlinson said. He said he did not know how they obtained it.

As part of the students' punishment, the annual senior picnic in Saratoga Springs was canceled, Tomlinson said. The primary reason for the picnic's cancellation, though, was low turnout.

"Of 160 students, we had 30 sign up," he said. "The majority of the decision [to cancel] was due to not enough interest."

Broadalbin-Perth senior Hannah Pecora said neither she nor her friends were bothered by the cancellation of the picnic.

"No one was really that mad about it," she said.

"It wasn't really that bad," she said. "A bunch of us got together anyway and had a barbecue of our own."

As for the prank, Pecora said she and other seniors thought it wasn't the best choice.

"We just thought it was stupid," she said. "At first we didn't really care, but it went too far."

Come on you people in Broadalbin. If that happened in good ole Gloversville, you people would be having a field day with it. But since it happened in your quaint little village you are ticked off it made the papers.

I agree mickey1, awards should not have been included for punishment.

It's sad too, I am sure most of them worked hard to get them.

There community service should be to mop and wax the floors the furniture is out of the rooms. Its an okay prank but they could have been more creative. They got caught and have to pay the price, 30 hrs. of community service seems fair .Move on . Good luck class of 2008

the teacher is in trouble for messing around with a girl....

As for the key... I really don't think it's appropriate to say who and where they got it from

Lame...who cares...just made the maintainence staff have to work a little harder. They could of definately done worse. In college, we moved our buddies entire dorm room outside. Bed, dressers, computer, everything and arranged it just like the room. Then sat there and waited him to come back from class. The RD "repremanded" us by telling us that it was funny and move it back by 10pm.

ok for teh record the picnic was canceleld because alot of them got together and decided not go because there friends who did the prank could go that was pretty nice of them and yes it wasn't right but no harm done, as far as, the punichment they got out of school, cummity d\service 30 hrs no trip and there awards taken away, i don't think that the awards should of been taken thats not fair, i can bet if one of those student was a board members kid they would have been alittl more lighter on these kids. oh ya cuntina mercedes i suppose you never did anything wrong as a kid!
