Senior picnic canceled after senior prank
By KAYLEIGH KARUTIS, The Leader-HeraldBROADALBIN - A senior prank at Broadalbin-Perth High School contributed to the cancellation of the senior picnic and resulted in suspensions and orders of community service.
Some 16 students were involved in the prank, Superintendent Stephen Tomlinson said. The students obtained a key to the building and went in during the weekend about two weeks ago, he said. They took furniture, including desks, from classrooms and placed it in the hallway, Tomlinson said.
There was no damage to any of the property, he said.
"It was more of an inconvenience than anything else," he said.
The students were brought before the school's Board of Education, Tomlinson said. They were suspended from school for three days and ordered to perform 30 hours of community service each, he said.
The school recovered the key, Tomlinson said. He said he did not know how they obtained it.
As part of the students' punishment, the annual senior picnic in Saratoga Springs was canceled, Tomlinson said. The primary reason for the picnic's cancellation, though, was low turnout.
"Of 160 students, we had 30 sign up," he said. "The majority of the decision [to cancel] was due to not enough interest."
Broadalbin-Perth senior Hannah Pecora said neither she nor her friends were bothered by the cancellation of the picnic.
"No one was really that mad about it," she said.
"It wasn't really that bad," she said. "A bunch of us got together anyway and had a barbecue of our own."
As for the prank, Pecora said she and other seniors thought it wasn't the best choice.
"We just thought it was stupid," she said. "At first we didn't really care, but it went too far."

Now, now, roboto, this isn't so much about Tomlinson, is it? The kids made a prank, they (some of them) got caught. So what? Pranks happen and oftentimes people pay- as they should because I'd be ****** if my stuff was in disarray at this time of year! Nothing new here.

I guess they tolerate a teacher giving a student private sex ed tutoring more than they approve of a group of seniors having some fun that is not causing harm. The pranks that were done at my school were worse than this. I wonder what the Superintendent did when he was a kid probably worse than what these kids did.

Oh, for crying out loud! Someone needs to "foil" Tomlinson's office the next time he's off at some "conference" at a resort.

The seniors want to be treated as adults, maybe it is about time they acted like adults. Most still act like spoiled, pampered kids even after 4 years of college. 15 days after I graduated I was at Fort Dix, NJ starting basic training.

@ ReclaimGville So I did some asking and found out the senior prank this year in Gloversville was putting zip tie locks on all the lockers on June 13 - the day everyone was supposed to clean out their lockers. This was done during school hours in the morning, a Junior reported it so they were all cut off before the morning was even over. So you know - it is no wonder why that didn't get reported in the local media.

Just found this - seems like it was only asenior having fun - why all the fuss? === June 13, 2008 A Pleasant Valley High School student ended up in the Monroe County prison after a senior prank went wrong. State Police arrested Arnold Marshall, 18, of Saylorsburg. They say the prank Thursday morning led to damage in bathrooms and hallways at the school in Brodheadsville. Marshall also had to be treated at a hospital. Troopers say that Marshall had taken chemicals from the chemistry room and a cleaner from the janitor's closet. On Thursday, they say he took the chemicals into one of the bathrooms and mixed them together. He then went to another bathroom, dripping the solution in the hallways as the walked. Police say the mixture left stains and chemical burns on the walls and floors of both bathrooms. Two hallways were also damaged. Marshall had to be treated at Pocono Medical Center for respiratory problems

@ UnseeninGloversville You said "You have no idea how dumb the pranks we pulled were when we were in school." Oh yeah I do. Soaping up a teachers car and being told to wash it. Planning a senior skip day abnd being told we would be marked abset if we actualyl did it. All the girls wearing skimpy skirts and showing belly buttons and being sent home because it violated the dress code. Boy - we were sure stupid when what we really should have been doing was breaking into the school and vandalizing it. God - you are so right! What on earth were we thinking? And people - it was NOT just moving the cafeteria tables and chairs into the office - there was a lot more that was done that everyone chooses to overlook. Had this happened at, say, 4 PM on a Friday and it was only moving chairs and tables around the cafeteria and nothing more it may not have been an issue like it is now. But plain and simple it was not done that way and that is not all that was done.

I understand that what the students did were wrong, but taking their awards away was wrong too. They worked very hard all year to even achieve those and they shouldn't have been taken away. Just because of a dumb prank. You have no idea how dumb the pranks we pulled were when we were in school. From super gluing the teachers to their chairs and sticking thumbtacks in the erasers... they were WAY worse than moving desks and chairs out into the hallway. Yes the breaking and entering...I can see punishing them for that...but the awards come on. Taking them away is like telling them why bother working so hard ... you only lkose in the end.

School administrators are inconsistent in the way they deliver consequences. Today, kids get away with all manner of poor behavior and the punishment is nearly non-existent. Which is why the South Colonie kids figured it was no big deal to discharge fire extinguishers on those busses. After all, it was no big deal when they decided to: (pick any/all) not do homework, skip class, bully the new kid, bring contraband to school, wet themselves in front of their history class... Nip their bad behavior in the bud and the kids will learn that acting foolishly is not wise and acting criminally is downright out of the question!

@ jbd333 - The "Comminuty Service" here was mainly in and around the school @ countrygirl - so if I got a key to your house from your parents, used it to come in and wrote messages all over, moved all the kitchen furnature into the bedroom, put your living room chairs on top of the toliet and just basicly caused a mess you would ok with that? AFter all "What was the harm?? There was NO damage and no one got hurt, there was no destruction..."

PART 2) And the whole story is not really put out here either. The students who got put in dention and who had to do community service were only the ONES WHO GOT CAUGHT or who stepped forward on their own. There were more involved than the 19 students out scrubbing the bleachers in time for garduation or planting flowers around the school. Yeah none of them thought about the breaking and entering part and when things started to get a bit out of hand some took off but every person who walked though those doors into a CLOSED AND LOCKED building is guilty. Had the disctrict decided to press charges this would be a whole lot worse so every parent and student should thak the school for not pressing charges. Also this isn't really "old news" by any means but you can not blame Kayleigh if she did not read the police blotter or keep her ear to a police scanner and was told to report on this after the fact.

kristina-I agree. If this had happened 20 or 30 years ago, it would have been handled completely different. It seems like everything is blown out of proportion now a days. Things that we did for fun are now "crimes". Makes you wonder if there's any connection with the way kids act today. And by the things we did for fun-I don't mean like starting fires in a house or stealing copper pipes right out of a house! I'm sure the readers know the kind of fun I'm talking about.

Ok so I have read comments and bit my touge but what part of breaking and enterting don't people seem to get? Forget senior prank - the school is privat eproperty and several people who were not authorized to be on the property - to be clear here - INSIDE THE SCHOOL WHEN IT WAS CLOSED -broke in. And oh yes my reading buddies - stealing (Or "Borrowing") a master key and using it to enter someplace they are not supposed to enter is considered breaking and entering...not to mention the theft of the key. (CHARACTER LIMIT REACHED)

Oh come on Mister Tomlinson, these kids were just having a little end of the year FUN and caused no damage to the taxpayers property and minor incovenience's. Now come on Stephen,I believe that you can/could not say that you and/or your School Board of Education has not at anytime caused some incovenience, while not causeing no damage to others properties while some fun was being had****E ON NOW BE HONEST PLEASE In my opinon,I believe that you can find out where the "KEY" came from and handed said key to the kids to have some FUN.Then pass the "Judgment(s) on to the "culprit"and then in some NICE,KIND WAY find a way to exonerate these fun loving kids from the HARSH PUNISHMENT that was imposed on them. And to all who have written the "Comments" re: this matter, what do you think of getting together and HAVE SOME FUN HERE ! ! ! I'm having fun with this COMMENT and thanx 4 ur time ! The ole man in Az. and good luck to class of 2008
