Sweep results in seven arrests

By MICHAEL ANICH, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: June 23, 2008

JOHNSTOWN — A Fulton County traffic safety sweep over the weekend resulted in 30 tickets and seven arrests, Sheriff Thomas J. Lorey said.

Lorey said today he was pleased with the results of the sweep.

“I owe much of the success to the plate reader,” the sheriff said.

He was referring to a device obtained by the Sheriff’s Department through a state grant that can scan numerous license plates either on the road or in parking lots to determine a person’s vehicle and driving status.

Lorey said sheriff’s deputies and officers with the Broadalbin and Northville police departments concentrated efforts Friday through Sunday morning on the enforcement of traffic safety laws.

Lorey said 57 traffic stops took place.

A summary of the arrests follows:

• David C. Belfance, 49, of Amsterdam was charged at 3:10 p.m. Friday with misdemeanor operating with a suspended registration on Route 29 in the town of Johnstown. Belfance will appear July 9 in Johnstown Town Court.

• Sarah A. Babcock, 26, of Cohoes was charged at 4:55 p.m. Friday with misdemeanor operating with a suspended registration and operating without insurance on Route 30 in Perth. Babcock is scheduled to appear July 7 in Perth Town Court.

• Steven T. Gadreau, 24, of Syracuse was charged at 6:45 p.m. Friday with operating in excess of 55 mph and misdemeanor third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation following a stop on Route 29 in the town of Mayfield. Gadreau is scheduled to appear July 8 in Mayfield Town Court.

• Karen Backus, 39, of St. Johnsville was charged at 12:19 a.m. Saturday with failure to keep right and driving while intoxicated after a stop on Route 29 in the town of Mayfield. Backus is scheduled to appear July 8 in Mayfield Town Court.

• Donna L. Bargy, 52, of St. Johnsville was charged at 3:55 p.m. Saturday on charges of operating without insurance and misdemeanor operating with a suspended registration on Route 29 in the town of Broadalbin. Bargy is scheduled to appear July 10 in Broadalbin Town Court.

• Molly E. Wickson, 21, of Buffalo was charged at 4:35 p.m. Saturday with misdemeanor operating with a suspended registration on Route 29 in the town of Broadalbin. Wickson is scheduled to appear July 10 in Broadalbin Town Court.

• Ashley C. Kerr, 22, of Amsterdam was charged at 7:10 p.m. Saturday with misdemeanor operating with a suspended registration on County Highway 110 in the town of Broadalbin. Kerr is scheduled to appear July 10 in Broadalbin Town Court.

Lorey said tickets issued during the sweep were in connection with a variety of violations, including uninspected and unregistered motor vehicles, operating without headlights, failure to keep right and traveling above posted speed limits.

The sheriff said additional traffic safety sweeps probably will occur in upcoming months.

The latest sweep was unannounced.

The sheriff said he doesn’t think it makes a difference in the number of arrests or tickets whether the Sheriff’s Department announces the sweeps beforehand.

So... no online blotter??? BOOOO.

The LH prolly worried about "online slander" or something.

Actually they prolly just want you to pay to read the "good stuff" too bad.

I agree with rsoxfan33. The online comments would be enlightening.

I was wondering where Yager19 got his statistics from. 30% out of what? One hundred? One thousand? One million? If your going to post statistics you should tell us where you get your data from. Otherwise 30% means dog-do to me. Read the Hurt study,Motorcycle Accident Cause Factor and Identification Countermeasures. There are some interesting stats that dispel some of the misconceptions about motorcycles. One of the number one causes of accidents with a bike is the driver of the car saying"sorry, I didn't even see the motorcycle."

Welcome to fulton county... where they let DWI's go on on and on!

Yager get your facts straight and stop picking on bikers! They do road blocks on bikers didnt you hear about americade?

Yager why dont they pick on the elderly that rear-end cars.. and run stop signs and red lights.. at least 3 times a day i watch an elderly person either run a red light or run a stop sign!

and remember some 85% of motorcycle accidents are at the fault of a driver of a CAR!!!!

I've never seen such a state that you can pretty much commit any crime and end up with "an appearance ticket" I left the g'ville area in 82 and lived in a few other states and one time DWI and your license is revoked, no registration? Well, 6 months suspended license, good old g'ville, appearence ticket!!!

I wonder why there were not stops for loud pipes on cars or morotcycles. Last I knew they were unlawful and according to statistics, at least 30% of all bikers are suspended, revoked or unlicensed.

itsjustme: Not complaining at all about these guys getting caught. I just question its newsworthiness.

The Leader-Herald is, well, getting kinda dull lately.

Telling me which people got arrested for not having licenses doesn't exactly amount to groundbreaking journalism, particularly when I coulda read it in the blotter.

Chill, brother.

itsjustme.. i dont think anyone is complaining.

are you kidding me? You are going to complain because these people got caught? when we are the ones that have to worry about paying for a registration and insurance on our cars? and these ones do not?

MrR i see no blotter, all i have is this online LH, and think its good info. i dont know about "front page" tho.

Um...isn't it a bit redundant to report all this in an article AND the police blotter?

I'm not defending these folks' actions, but c'mon...unlicensed operation doesn't normally merit front-page treatment, ya know?

If turning Tom Lorey's press releases into news articles is what passes for journalism at The Leader-Herald these days...
