Last month, I sent in a letter to the editor saying Fonda-Fultonville Central School students already know what sex is. While my sarcasm didn’t transfer well in print, if you spend some time near the park in Fultonville, you’ll learn who is doing whom and who they’ve just been with, when they’re not dropping an F-bomb every 10 seconds. Some of these kids, I would say, are as young as 14 or 15, sometimes younger.
So, they know what sex is, but do they know about condoms or how to protect themselves from STDs? Probably not, and that’s why FFCS needs a sex ed class. While I support that Fonda-Fultonville is finally going to have a sex ed/health class, I can’t help but wonder why it is taking so long to have a class at FFCS. I took sex ed at Broadalbin-Perth 18 years ago as a freshman in high school. My wife took sex ed 19 years ago at Scully — a private school.
When you hear about a school and a sex class, they are debating when the students should take the class. (Is third grade too early?) But here in Fonda, we’re debating whether there should be a sex ed class? (Never mind that Planned Parenthood might teach it.) Come on, the last time I checked the calendar, it was 2008. It’s time to get with the times. I can’t believe it’s taking this long to have such a class at Fonda. It makes you wonder what else they aren’t teaching the students.
